The design of this piece is of particular interest as the bird and dragon-like creature incised on the legs is reminiscent of contemporary woven and painted textiles, such as those found at Mashan, Jiangling in Hubei province.
The rarity and high esteem in which the Chinese regarded jade may be inferred from the fact that a number of these smaller objects have been carved from fragments of larger pieces, as well as from the discoloration found on some as a result of frequent handling.
Apart from the simple beauty of many of these pieces, the exhibition also offers viewers a comprehensive survey of jade of the archaic period, allowing one the chance to see the development and change in jade carving that occurred in China from the Neolithic, through the dynastic and into the imperial periods.
