Bias and sensitivity guidelines - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bias and sensitivity guidelines are guidelines that have been set up by several major textbook and standardized test publishers to remove potentially offensive words and phrases from their texts.
One of the less widely-supported theories used in standard bias and sensitivity guidelines is regional bias.
Simply put, regional bias is the idea that setting a story in a certain location puts at a disadvantage those children who read the story but are unfamiliar with the location.

 2002 Laboratory Guidelines - 2
The sensitivity of the nonamplified hybridization test (71.6%) was similar to that reported in an earlier study (75.3%) that compared the hybridization test, three EIAs, and a DFA performed on endocervical swab specimens by using culture as the reference standard (79).
For the urine specimen, the sensitivity of LCR was 80.8%.
Gram-stain sensitivity is not presented for men because Gram stain of urethral swab smears is seldom used for screening men outside STD clinic settings, and its performance for that purpose has not been well-evaluated.

Guidelines for Psychotherapy with Lesbian, Gay, & Bisexual Clients
The specific goals of these guidelines are to provide practitioners with (1) a frame of reference for the treatment of lesbian, gay, and bisexual clients, and (2) basic information and further references in the areas of assessment, intervention, identity, relationships, and the education and training of psychologists.
Guidelines differ from standards in that standards are mandatory and may be accompanied by an enforcement mechanism.
A sensitivity to the complex dynamics associated with factors such as cultural values about gender roles, religious and procreative beliefs, degree of individual and family acculturation, and the personal and cultural history of discrimination or oppression is also important.

To the reader of a guideline, the use of these rating scales provides an easy indicator of the quality of the evidence on which the guideline was formulated.

OECD Guidelines on the Protection of Privacy and Transborder Flows of Personal Data   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
These Guidelines apply to personal data, whether in the public or private sectors, which, because of the manner in which they are processed, or because of their nature or the context in which they are used, pose a danger to privacy and individual liberties.
The Guidelines therefore apply to personal data in general or, more precisely, to personal data which, because of the manner in which they are processed, or because of their nature or context, pose a danger to privacy and individual liberties.
It should be noted, however, that the Guidelines do not constitute a set of general privacy protection principles; invasions of privacy by, for instance, candid photography, physical maltreatment, or defamation are outside their scope unless such acts are in one way or another associated with the handling of personal data.

2.5.6. Uncertainty budgets and sensitivity coefficients
This Handbook follows the ISO guidelines in that biases are corrected (correction may be zero), and the uncertainty component is the standard deviation of the correction.
The sensitivity coefficient for the uncertainty of a reference standard is the nominal value of the test item divided by the nominal value of the reference standard.
If the uncertainty of the reported value is calculated from propagation of error, the sensitivity coefficients are the multipliers of the individual variance terms in the propagation of error formula.

Powell's Books - Review-a-Day - The Language Police: How Pressure Groups Restrict What Students Learn by Diane Ravitch, ...
Her book chronicles in exhaustive detail the ways in which bias and sensitivity guidelines have bowdlerized the language and the content of educational materials, principally in the humanities, though affecting maths and science as well.
In short, the textbook and testing guidelines were wary of anything that might raise an eyebrow -- whether it was the brow of a maiden aunt or of a committed anarchist.
Bias and sensitivity guidelines should be freely available over the internet, Ravitch says, so that parents and teachers can evaluate their validity.

Updated Guidelines for Evaluating Public Health Surveillance Systems
The measurement of the sensitivity of the surveillance system (Table 3) requires a) collection of or access to data usually external to the system to determine the true frequency of the condition in the population under surveillance (46) and b) validation of the data collected by the system.
For example, sensitivity could be determined for the system's data fields, for each data source or for combinations of data sources (48), for specific conditions under surveillance (53), or for each of several years (54).
The PVP reflects the sensitivity and specificity of the case definition (i.e., the screening and diagnostic tests for the health-related event) and the prevalence of the health-related event in the population under surveillance.

 Guidelines for Bias-Free Writing (Review by P. J. O'Rourke)
The preface to Guidelines says, "Our aim is simply to encourage sensitivity to usages that may be imprecise, misleading, and needlessly offensive." And few scholars would care to have their usages so viewed, myself excluded.
And Guidelines goes so far as to urge utter dishonesty upon translators, saying they should make up their own sanctimonious minds about "whether gender-biased characteristics of the original warrant replication in English." When the book is not lying or creating reasons to do so, it is engaging in the most tiresome sort of feminist scholasticism.

 Guidelines for Evaluating Surveillance Systems
With this in mind, the guidelines that follow describe many measures that can be applied to surveillance systems, with the clear understanding that all measures will not be appropriate for all systems.
The measurement of sensitivity in a surveillance system requires a) the validation of information collected by the system and b) the collection of information external to the system to determine the frequency of the condition in a community (4).
Changes in sensitivity can be precipitated by such events as heightened awareness of a disease, introduction of new diagnostic tests, and changes in the method of conducting surveillance.

Psychologists understand that homosexuality and bisexuality are not indicative of mental illness.

Moreover, end of life span tasks for lesbian, gay, and bisexual older adults are often complex and can develop into crises due to psychosocial stressors and heterosexism (Adelman, 1990; Berger and Kelly, 1996).
