The first Biathlon World Championship (BWCH) was held in 1958, with individual (official) and relay (unofficial) contests for men.
Beginning in 1984, women biathletes had their own World Championships, and finally, from 1989, both genders have been participating in joint BWCHs.
This event was first held in 2005, at the BWC finals in Khanty-Mansiysk.

Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, the Norwegian who won four gold medals at last year's Olympics, gained the overall World Cup title despite finishing 30th in the next-to-last men's race at these championships in Siberia.
The championships continue with the women's 30-kilometre relay Thursday.

HOCHFILZEN, Austria (CP) - Roman Dostal of the Czech Republic battled heavy snow and strong winds to win the 20-kilometre individual event at the biathlon world championships Wednesday, edging Michael Greis and Rico Gross.
He made only one shooting mistake and was quick enough to beat Greis, the only athlete without a shooting error.
Also, Liv Grete Poiree, who won four world titles in Oberhof, Germany, said she would retire after the 2006 Olympics in Turin, Italy.
