  The BibTeX Format
BibTeX is a program and file format designed by Oren Patashnik and Leslie Lamport in 1985 for the LaTeX document preparation system.
The BibTeX program uses style files, a list of citations from LaTeX, and a BibTeX database to create a LaTeX file listing the cited references.
The BibTeX program is written, as is all TeX, using static data structures, and the maximum length of any one string is by default 1000 characters.

Getting to Grips with Latex - Bibliography Management - Latex Tutorials by Andrew Roberts @ School of Computing, ...
Bibtex knows of practically all types you can think of, common ones such as book, article, and for papers presented at conferences, there is inproceedings, etc. In this example, I have referred to an article within a journal.
In the event that Bibtex has been set to not preserve all capitalisation within titles, problems can occur, especially if you are referring to proper nouns, or acronyms.
The next step is to run bibtex on that same Latex source (and not on the actual.bib file) to then define all the references within that document.

BibTeX is a processing engine that takes a database developed by you and applies it to a document in which you refer to entries in that database.
BibTeX automatically references every citation you make and will only make a reference to the sources that you actually cited.
If you only want to insert specific sources into your references from your.bib file, then you can modify this command so that it is: \nocite{key_1,key_2,...} where label_1 and label_2 are the labels of your respective sources.

 BibTeX for the MacOS
BibTeX is the bibliography handling tool related to the TeX/LaTeX typesetting system (available on almost all conceivable OS platforms).
BibTeX takes this list, together with the name of a style file (extension '.bst') and a list of bibliography databases (extension '.bib') which are also given in the auxiliary file, and produces a wonderfully formatted list of references which the LaTeX system subsequently (and automatically) appends to your typeset document.
Feature change: BibTeX now rejects any text file that's not '.aux' or '.blg'; before it would be passed to the core code and of course cause errors.

Using the BibTeX option affects the generation of your document in several ways: The BibTeX program reads the.aux file, which is generated by a LaTeX compiler (such as the TrueTeX compiler included in our package).
From this file BibTeX recognizes which sources are cited in your document and chooses only these references for generating your list.

Advantages over making manual bibliographies include: consistency in presentation of entries, ease of changing bibliography style, correct numbering and sequential ordering of entries, and the only entries in the bibliography of the final document are those that are cited in the body of the document.
This tells BibTeX which style to use for displaying the bibliography (in this example, it uses the h-elsevier2 style, where the full filename is h-elsevier2.bst), and the name of the bibliography database file (which will have the full filename physics.bib).

 New BibTeX features
BibTeX does a pretty good job, but occasionally weird circumstances conspire to confuse : Suppose that you have entries in your database for the two books in a two-volume set by the same author, and that you'd like volume 1 to appear just before volume 2 in your reference list.
specifies some fancy accent that's supposed to adorn the `a' and the `b'; thus when BibTeX sorts it will pretend that `a1973' and `b1971' are the real years, and since `a' comes before `b', it will place volume 1 before volume 2, just what you wanted.
BibTeX no longer does case conversion for file names; this will make BibTeX easier to install on Unix systems, for example.
