Bible Belt - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A Bible Belt is an area in which socially conservative Christian Evangelical Protestantism is a pervasive or dominant part of the culture.
The term "Bible Belt" was coined by the American journalist and social commentator, H.L. Mencken, in the early 1920s.
It is possible that the extent of the Bible Belt has grown in recent decades, expanding northward and westward; indeed, Southern-style evangelical Christianity has grown significantly outside the South, especially the Southern Baptist Convention.

The Bible Belt is an area including a number of southern and midwestern states in the USA in which fervent Protestantism is a pervasive part of the culture.
The stronghold of the Bible Belt is typically The South.
The "belt" terminology is common in the U.S. to describe regions with a roughly east-west orientation that share a feature, such as the Rust Belt, a term to describe declining industrial areas of the northeast and upper midwest, and the Sun Belt, a term for hot-weather states stretching from coast to coast.

Aside from the quickie-divorce Mecca of Nevada, no region of the United States has a higher divorce rate than the Bible Belt.
Religion may play a role, since some of the lowest divorce rates are in northeastern states with relatively high household incomes and large numbers of Roman Catholics whose church doesn't recognize divorce.
Bible Belt states, in contrast, are dominated by fundamentalist Protestant denominations that proclaim the sanctity of marriage but generally do not want to estrange churchgoers who do divorce.

If we define the Bible Belt as a sequence of Mid-Western/Southern states with a high degree of Protestant fundamentalism, Stark and Bainbrisge claim it doesn't actually exist.
While the 'Bible Belt' does have a concentration of Protestants, their degree of fundamentalism - as measured by church membership, church attendance, conventional religious belief, prayer, or religious experience - is not significantly different from anywhere else in the USA.
A crucial constitute of the 'Bible Belt' states is that they're agricultural, creating rural domination of the state legislature.

In Southern Cross: The Beginnings of the Bible Belt, Christine Heyrman traces the difficulties encountered by 18th century evangelicals in spreading Baptist and Methodist beliefs to the South, and discusses the remedies they employed to make their faith more acceptable within southern culture.
These rough, bold pioneers were actually viewed as effete and effeminate by the plantation hedonocracy because of their distaste for hunting, shooting, duelling, riding to hounds, cursing, dancing, drinking, and gambling which were the pastimes of the leisure class.
Christine Leigh Heyrman's Southern Cross: The Beginnings of the Bible Belt is a fine piece of history, particularly timely in light of the Southern Baptist's recent proclamation regarding a wife's status.

This reduction in Protestant churches, relative to the rest of the country especially the South, has created an anomalous situation whereby the center of gravity of American Protestantism has moved to the middle and south, politically and culturally cleaving these regions.
Finally, because Protestants generally place a greater emphasis on personal Bible study than Catholics do, it might be said that Protestantism is more associated with the terms Bible Belt or “Bible-Thumpers” than is Catholicism.
