 CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Citation
Real citation is had recourse to, when the accused is suspected of meditating flight or is contumacious; edictal citation, when the defendant can be reached in no other way; peremptory citation only under extraordinary circumstances.
There are many requisites for a legitimate citation, as that it be asked for by one party to the suit, that it contain the names of plaintiff and defendant, the cause of the summons, the day and place of judgment and so forth.
If the citation be not couched in the prescribed legal style, or if it be issued for one beyond the court's jurisdiction, it may be disregarded.

 CITATION INDEXES——NEW DIMENSION IN DOCUMENTATION
As a further demonstration of the broad application of this principle, the author proposes to compile a citation index to the Old Testament….
In the citation index to the Old Testament the user will find listed for each verse, according to the numbering found in the King James Version, all those books, articles, poems, quotations, titles of books and plays, etc. that had been based on the verse in question.
If an interpretive citation index were compiled, almost amounting to a formalized Bible commentary, citations would be added even though the verse in question had not been cited, but was "implied".

When using citations, one generally uses both a works cited page or section--also called the bibliography, source list or list of references --in conjunction with parenthetical citations (citations which refer the reader to a particular cited work).
As an alternative to parenthetical citations, some styles include citations in footnotes, which appear at the end of each page, or endnotes, which appear at the end of the document.

The first form of the Divine name in the Bible is 'Elohim, ordinarily translated "God" (Genesis 1:1).
This name ('abhir), translated in English Versions of the Bible "Mighty One," is always combined with Israel or Jacob; its root is 'abhar, "to be strong" from which is derived the word 'ebher, "pinion," used of the strong wing of the eagle (Isaiah 40:31), figuratively of God in Deuteronomy 32:11.

The basic MLA citation style consists of a brief in-text citation keyed to a reference in an alphabetical list of works included at the end of the paper.
A complete citation thus has two parts: (1) an in-text citation in the body of the paper, and (2) a bibliographic reference in the list of works cited.
If your focus and citations are primarily to the translator's comments or choice of words rather than to the translated work, refer to the translator.

Remember that when you use the parenthetical citations illustrated above, you are citing a particular text or translation of the Bible, not the specific book, like The HarperCollins Study Bible, in which that text was found.
To cite the Biblical text itself in the Anchor Bible translation, use a parenthesis that includes the abbreviation AB and the volume’s author and number.

Hope it helps DOCUMENTING A QUOTE FROM A BIBLE: The first time you make a citation from the Bible, state in the text of your paper the chapter and the verse of the book of the Bible you are quoting, along with the name and the version of the Bible you are using.
For example: "In Luke 12.27 in the Oxford Annotated Bible, Revised Standard Edition, it says…" From that point on, you can simply refer to the book, chapter, and verse you are quoting.
For example: "And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes" (Matthew 7.28-29).
