  Luther's Translation of the Bible
At last a conservative official revision of the Luther Bible was inaugurated by the combined German church governments in 1863, with a view and fair prospect of superseding all former editions in public use.
Jerome's Vulgate is an advance upon the Itala, both in accuracy and Latinity; the Protestant Versions of the sixteenth century are an advance upon the Vulgate, in spirit and in idiomatic reproduction; the revisions of the nineteenth century are an advance upon the versions of the sixteenth, in philological and historical accuracy and consistency.

 fikestar: Bible
The Bible (From Greek βιβλια—biblia, meaning "books", which in turn is derived from βυβλος—byblos meaning "papyrus", from the ancient Phoenician city of Byblos which exported papyrus) is the sacred scripture of Christianity.
Canon refers to the accepted books of the Bible differentiated from other sacred writings not accepted as inspired by God, which are not accepted as part of the Bible.
Today there are two loosely defined schools of thought with regard to the historicity of the Bible (Biblical minimalism and Biblical maximalism) with many in between, in addition to the traditional religious reading of the Bible.

The Bible's wide distribution and use by Jews and Christians as a "handbook" for living has extended its influence beyond religion, to language and law and, until the modern era, also informed the natural philosophy of mainstream Western Civilization.
The Age of Enlightenment and the Scientific Revolution in Europe and America brought skepticism regarding the historical events in the Bible, particularly those attributed to divine intervention; however, the ontological and normative teachings of the Bible remain at the center of Western culture.
The word "bible" (in lower case) is also used to refer to any tome which incorporates comprehensive coverage of its subject.

Chapter 119 of Psalms, the longest chapter of the Bible, which follows Psalm 118, the middle chapter of the Bible, is the only chapter in the Bible that has the entire Hebrew alphabet listed one letter at a time as a heading for each subsection of the chapter.
Years before I ever knew of this 'center of the Bible' chapter, and before I discovered the alphabetics phenomenon, I was led by the Lord to uncover the chiastic structure of Psalm 118.
The one chapter of the Bible that lists the Hebrew Alphabet as part of the text, happens to be 2.5 chapters away from the center of the Bible.

Curiosities of Literature: The Pearl Bibles, and Six Thousand Errata
This extraordinary attempt on the English Bible began even before Charles the First’s dethronement, and probably arose from an unusual demand for Bibles, as the sectarian fanaticism was increasing.
The printing of Bibles at length was a privilege conceded to one William Bentley; but he was opposed by Hills and Field; and a paper war arose, in which they mutually recriminated on each other, with equal truth.
In other Bibles by Hills and Field we may find such abundant errata, reducing the text to nonsense or to blasphemy, making the Scriptures contemptible to the multitude, who came to pray, and not to scorn.

The Bible (From Greek (τα) βιβλια, (ta) biblia, "(the) books", plural of βιβλιον, biblion, "book", originally a diminutive of βιβλος, biblos, which in turn is derived from βυβλος—''byblos'', meaning "papyrus", from the ancient Phoenician city of Byblos which exported this writing material), is a word applied to sacred scriptures.
Although most often used of Jewish and Christian scriptures, "Bible" is sometimes used to describe scriptures of other faiths; thus the Guru Granth Sahib is often referred to as the "Sikh Bible".
As the original meaning of the word indicates, Jewish and Christian Bibles are actually collections of several books, considered to be inspired by God.
