Topic: Biblical hermeneutics

In the News (Wed 30 Dec 09)

  CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Hermeneutics
Biblical hermeneutics presupposes, therefore, a knowledge of the history of the Canon of both the Old and the New Testament, an acquaintance with the results of the lower or textual criticism, and a study of the dogmatic treatise on inspiration.
Thus, Biblical hermeneutics deals with Sacred Scripture as its material object, furnishing a complex set of rules for finding and expressing the true sense of the inspired writers, while the discovery and presentation of the genuine sense of Sacred Scripture may be said to be its formal object.
Biblical hermeneutics belongs to this second class, not because the universal rules of exegesis are inapplicable to the Sacred Books, but because the sacred character of the Bible demands additional rules of interpretation, which are not applicable to profane writings.

 What is Biblical Hermeneutics?
Answer: Biblical hermeneutics is perhaps summarized best by 2 Timothy 2:15, "Be diligent to present yourself approved to God, a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth." Biblical hermeneutics is the science of knowing how to properly interpret the various types of literature found in the Bible.
Biblical hermeneutics keeps us faithful to the intended meaning of Scripture and away from allegorizing and symbolizing Bible verses and passages that should be understood literally.
A second crucial "law" of Biblical hermeneutics is that a verse or passage must be interpreted historically, grammatically, and contextually.

Biblical hermeneutics - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biblical hermeneutics is part of the broader hermeneutical question, relates to the problem of how one is to understand Holy Scripture.
Therefore one ought to differentiate between Christian and Jewish Biblical hermeneutics: although there is an overlap between the two (and some form of dialogue), since they share part of their scriptures, they do arise out of different faith traditions and thus developed their own notion of hermeneutics.
This particular form of theological hermeneutics, especially within the mainstream, self-declared 'orthodox' Protestant tradition, considers Christian Biblical hermeneutics in the tradition of explication of the text, or exegesis, to deal with various principles that can be applied to the study of Scripture.

 Issues in Hermeneutics
If modern theories of hermeneutics are to be used in the study of Scripture, Scripture is effectively taken out of the hands of God's people as a book incapable of being understood except by those who are adept at applying, e.g., literary-historical criticism to biblical interpretation.
If Hermeneutics is the science of biblical interpretation, it follows from the very nature of Scripture itself that no formal instruction is necessary for a regenerated saint to be able to understand what God is saying in His Word.
Hermeneutics is applicable in each science which has to do with texts, but in the organism of science it has its own proper place only in the science of Philology.

Biblical hermeneutics is the science that teaches the principles and methods of interpreting the Word of God.
Proper hermeneutics provide us tools to help ensure that we are basing our interpretations on the truth as God has revealed it, while avoiding error to the greatest degree possible.
It is solidly in the "literal schools" of interpretation, and is the hermeneutical methodology embraced by virtually all evangelical Protestant exegetes and scholars.

 New Biblical Archaeology
Not unlike hermeneutics which is being supplanted by the infamous "new hermeneutics," biblical archaeology is being revamped with a "new" biblical archaeology.
Further, the propositions of both "new hermeneutics" and "new biblical archaeology" contradict the respective topics of hermeneutics and biblical archaeology.
Biblical archaeology sprang from Palestinian archaeology as a calculated effort to offset German "higher criticism" of the Bible.

The principles of Biblical Hermeneutics are universally accepted in the united Christian opposition of those who claim non-Trinitarian theologies, infant baptism, homosexuality, Gnostics interpretations, and modern polygamy to name a few.
Hermeneutics particularly comes into play in Scriptures where the interpretation may not be clear or when someone proposes an interpretation that is contrary to the interpretation which is obvious to you.
Biblical Hermeneutics is the scientific, logical, Scriptural and theological methodology we use when there is more than one possible interpretation of a text.

Article IX that the term hermeneutics, which historically signified the rules of exegesis, may properly be extended to cover all that is involved in the process of perceiving what the biblical revelation means and how it bears on our lives.
Thus we deny that the "horizons" of the biblical writer and the interpreter may rightly "fuse" in such a way that what the text communicates to the interpreter is not ultimately controlled by the expressed meaning of the Scripture.
Article XX that since God is the author of all truth, all truths, biblical and extrabiblical, are consistent and cohere, and that the Bible speaks truth when it touches on matters pertaining to nature, history, or anything else.

In this context biblical hermeneutics denotes the interpretive theory which provides the rules by which a trained theologian seeks to read the minds of the biblical authors.
Hermeneutics in this context denotes the process by which the interpreter lets the understanding of existence in the text meet and shape his existence.
Hermeneutics, therefore, has the goal of letting the text speak to one’s life with as much clarity and directiveness as it had when it spoke to the lives of those who first heard it.

Hermeneutics & Biblical Theology, by S.M. Baugh
Let it suffice to say that most practitioners of biblical theology employ a wide range of traditional tools in the process of biblical interpretation: analysis of the historical-cultural setting, studies in the original languages, discourse analysis, attention to genre, etc. These are all carefully employed.
To conclude, then, we have described the hermeneutics of biblical theology as a Christocentric approach to the bible that we found was commended to us by Christ on the Emmaus road, and by Paul in Galatians three.
And although we have not used the term until now, biblical theology is a recognition that eschatology‹or the biblical teaching on the last things‹is central throughout the entire course of redemptive history.

The Role of the Holy Spirit in Biblical Hermeneutics by Robert J May, M.Th.
It is the purpose of this dissertation to explore the subject of the role of the Holy Spirit in hermeneutics, reviewing the main literature with the intention of providing some tentative suggestions as to where further enquiry and progress might be made.
This raises many questions about the place of traditional hermeneutics and the role of the academy; the role of the individual and the role of the community; and the role of the history of interpretation within the church and the present context that the church finds herself.
The third motive for this study is the place of the ‘Hermeneutical Community’ in the task of biblical interpretation and particularly as the primary context for the Spirit’s activity in biblical interpretation.

However, as the church began to grow, heresies came into the church, and to protect the church some of the church fathers had to begin to put together more exacting guidelines for Bible interpretation, or Hermeneutics.

 Extra-Biblical Hermeneutics
In a hermeneutical symposium where I spoke on the side of interpreting the bible with the Bible, a pastor who attended stated that with the discovery of the "Nuzu texts" light was shed on the reason that Hagar was given to Abraham to bear children.
My response to the inclusion of the Nuzu Texts for biblical understanding was that it may open up a cultural understanding but to understand this event from a biblical point of view it is necessary to search the Scriptures and see what spiritual application God is making.
The only reason there are not more biblical Christians is two reasons: First, they have not gone passed their pastor's education; and secondly, laziness engendered by the belief we can have instant understanding if we read a modern version.
