The Development Of Archeology : Biblical Archeology
The artifacts and inscriptions thus discovered were studied in some detail.
Archeology was not yet an established science, so the study was quite preliminary, but the systematic way in which it was done opened one door to the birth of objective archeology.
However, during the ninteenth century, the growth and development of standard methodologies for the empirical sciences was enough for many museum curators to realize that the haphazard way in which these artifacts were collected and piled in museums was only destroying much of the evidence related to antiquity.

Theology Today - Vol 42, No. 3 - October 1985 - CRITIC'S CORNER - Church and Biblical Scholarship in Dialogue
THE often antagonistic relationship between biblical scholarship or the academy, on the one hand, and the believing community or church, on the other, is actually a particular case of the more general and ongoing conflict between science and faith which dates back to the Enlightenment.
The tension between biblical scholarship and the believing church is based on a mutual misunderstanding that is surprisingly tenacious.
It is the distancing work of the biblical scholar which keeps the non-scientific reader from "gobbling up" the text, uncritically assimilating it into his or her own worldview and thus domesticating it rather than being confronted by it.

 Biblical Archaeology
However, to the true believer in divine inspiration, each 'find' made in the field of biblical archaeology, is a link in the long chain of historical events that unite God's people of all ages.
Archaeology is the 3D spectacles through which we see the two dimensional picture of biblical history transformed into the sometimes breathtaking three dimensional picture in which people and places, events and customs, can be touched, felt, and experienced.
These simple exercises demonstrate that to actually see the artifact, to touch and feel it, to thus vicariously experience the reality of the parable, the miracle, or the event, can mean more than a thousand tellings of it.

A common feature of these artifacts is their reference to Jerusalem through attributions to major biblical landmarks or personalities such as the Jerusalem Temple, Judahite kings and other biblical officials, or Jesus Christ.
Methodologically, it seems that this peculiar treatment of these artifacts by members of the scientific community may be interpreted as a milder symptom of the Jerusalem Syndrome.
The patina and the deposits on the artifact's surface and the inscription seem to have developed naturally during burial, as modern materials were detected.

 James
This could well be the earliest artifact ever found relating to the existence of Jesus, a French scholar has concluded in an analysis of the inscription being published this week in the magazine Biblical Archaeology Review.
Before this, Biblical Archaeology Review reported, the earliest mention of Jesus was in a piece of papyrus containing a fragment of the Gospel by John, written in Greek in about A.D. Most of the existing early texts for the New Testament date from 300 or more years after the time of Jesus.
Like other biblical scholars, Dr. James C. VanderKam of the University of Notre Dame praised Dr. Lemaire as an authoritative epigrapher, or specialist in ancient inscriptions, whose research is thorough and evaluations judicious.

Greek mythology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
These accounts were initially fashioned and disseminated in an oral-poetic tradition; our surviving sources of Greek mythology are literary reworkings of this oral tradition.
Greek mythology was also reflected in artifacts, some of them works of art, notably the repertoiry of vase-painters.
The Greeks themselves referred to the myths and associated artworks to throw light on cult practices and ritual traditions that were already ancient and, at times, poorly understood.

Burial Box May Be Jesus Artifact - CBS News
Some biblical scholars describe James as Jesus' half brothers, others say he was a cousin, reports CBS News Correspondent Randall Pinkston, but there is widespread agreement that he led the early church in Jerusalem and was executed in A.D. The age of the box would place it in the same time period as that James.
Biblical Archaeology Review editor Hershel Shanks said the owner bought the box about 15 years ago from an Arab antiquities dealer in Jerusalem who said it was unearthed south of the Mount of Olives.
Until now, the oldest surviving artifact that mentions Jesus is a fragment of chapter 18 in John's Gospel from a manuscript dated around A.D. It was discovered in Egypt in 1920.
