Biblical Theology - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Biblical Theology is a discipline within Christian theology which studies the Bible from the perspective of understanding the progressive history of God revealing himself to Man following the Fall and throughout the Old Testament and New Testament.
Biblical Theology is sometimes called the "History of Special Revelation" since it deals with the unfolding and expanding nature of revelation as history progresses through the Bible.
Biblical theology can be compared with and is complemented by Systematic theology in that the former focuses on historical progression through out the Bible while the later focuses on thematic progression through out the Bible.

During the High Middle Ages theology was therefore the main subject at universities, being named "The Queen of the Sciences" alongside the Trivium and Quadrivium that young men were expected to study.
Theology was no longer the principle subject and Universities existed for many purposes, not only to train Clergy for established churches.
As study of theology in these countries includes a strong (Christian) humanist content, graduates of theology who do not wish to embark on clerical career may find work also in marketing, business or administration, although this is frowned upon by many.

Biblical Theology, by Geerhardus Vos   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Theology, therefore, is now defined as the science of religion, and that, too, in the sense chiefly of a phenomenology of religion, in which by far the greater part of the investigation is devoted to the superficial external side of religion and the heart of the matter receives scant treatment.
Theology having become the science of religion, Biblical Theology must needs become the history of one, be it the greatest, of all religions, the history of the religion of Israel and of primitive Christianity.
The student of Biblical Theology has the satisfaction of knowing that his treatment of Biblical matters is not prescribed for him exclusively by the tactics of his enemies, and that, while most effectually defending the truth, he at the same time is building the temple of divine knowledge on the positive foundation of the faith.

Biblical and Systematic Theology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Systematic Theology is not a concatenation of the scattered theological data furnished by the exegetic process; it is the combination of the already concatenated data given to it by Biblical Theology.
Biblical theology is indispensable to systematic theology because biblical theology is regulative of exegesis.
Second, biblical theology, as an exegetical methodology which is self-consciously cognizant of the unity of Scripture, guarantees that the hermeneutical process from exegesis to systematic doctrinal formulation is in accord with the Reformation's key interpretive principle, the analogy of Scripture.

NDBT's Introduction to Biblical Theology   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-29)
Biblical theology is integral to the whole process of discerning the meaning of the biblical text and of applying this meaning to the contemporary scene.
Biblical theology is practised by Christian communities and is intricately linked to their determination to shape their faith, life, worship and service in accordance with Scripture under the guidance of the Spirit (see Preaching and Biblical Theology).
Biblical theology came to be seen as a purely historical, descriptive and objective discipline, separate from the concerns of biblical interpreters.

Can a Charismatic Theology Be Biblical?
Biblical theology has demonstrated a sharp divergence in emphases between the New Testament and traditional systematic theology in the areas of hermeneutics, the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of God, soteriology, and faith, among others.
The consequence of this approach is that a strongly charismatic theology is also, centrally, a biblical theology, normatively binding on all who claim scripture as their primary principle of religious authority.
Biblical theology, however, is more willing to recognize the connections of faith and the mighty works of Jesus and others: that while faith has Jesus or God as its object, the immediate result may be healing or deliverance, not simply limited to "salvation" as traditionally defined.

Kerux...The Online Journal of Biblical Theology
The morass of liberal and radical biblical theology was evident not only to the more astute among them, but to the "man in the pew." By the last decade of the nineteenth century, so-called biblical theology of the critical stripe had eviscerated the theology from the Bible.
For Vos, genuine biblical theology is derived from the conviction that the Scriptures are "objective revelation." We do not meet a mere witness to revelation in the Scriptures, nor do we find a record of religious inspiration, nor do we study to remove the temporal from the eternal.
Biblical theology arises from an objective self-disclosure of God, not a species of the human religious consciousness.

Hermeneutics & Biblical Theology, by S.M. Baugh
Biblical theology would insist that the Old Testament types spoke as witnesses to the coming realities of Christ in their own day, as well as in ours.
Let it suffice to say that most practitioners of biblical theology employ a wide range of traditional tools in the process of biblical interpretation: analysis of the historical-cultural setting, studies in the original languages, discourse analysis, attention to genre, etc. These are all carefully employed.
And although we have not used the term until now, biblical theology is a recognition that eschatology‹or the biblical teaching on the last things‹is central throughout the entire course of redemptive history.

So long as the exegesis of biblical passages is conducted by such analogy-of-faith hermeneutics, it would be difficult for systematic theology to be nourished and corrected by exegetical considerations from the biblical text.
So the history-of-religions school presented biblical theology with an exegetical tool which made it virtually impossible for the Bible's message to be molded according to the current philosophy of a given culture.
