In cooperation with the Biblioteca Ambrosiana in Milan, Italy, Professor Robert Randolf Coleman of the University of Notre Dame is producing this inventory-catalogue of the Ambrosiana's collection of some 12,000 drawings by European artists who were active from the fourteenth through nineteenth centuries.
Former Director of the Medieval Institute and Doctor of the Ambrosiana Astrik L. Gabriel became coordinator of the project whereby the Institute acquired positive and negative microfilms of all 12,000 Ambrosiana manuscripts; photographs and negatives of 10,000 drawings and 30,000 manuscript illuminations; and 8,000 color slides of drawings and illuminations.
At an early stage of the project, Dr. Angelo Paredi, former Prefect of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana, suggested that a selection of Ambrosiana drawings be sent to Notre Dame for exhibition.

a key to Milan [guidebook] - Private Art Collections
The manuscripts collected in the Biblioteca Ambrosiana (Ambrosiana Library) were intended to contribute to studies to establish the only official version of the Bible.
Its atmosphere is a peculiar mix formed, on the one hand, by awareness of being one of the most prestigious cultural institutions in the world and, on the other, by an air of familiarity typical of certain old Milanese institutions.
Although this boundless cultural wealth of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana has not all been reexamined with the latest methods in recent time, reference can be made to numerous critical works elaborated by academics the world over.

In a world full of change and uncertainty, this is a major landmark for any institution, and the Biblioteca Ambrosiana has every reason to be proud of its achievement.
We continue to honour our Founder by re-interpreting and renewing his vision as the centuries pass, and we regard it as our historic privilege to try to maintain the continuing relevance and value of the institution which he founded so successfully, and in such a determined fashion, so many years ago.

A binding contract was drawn up between the then Prefect of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana of Milan, Monsignor Paredi, and the Director of the "Laboratorio di Restauro" of Grottaferrata, Padre Daniele Barbiellini, which contract is still preserved in the archives.
The fundamental clause of this contract was that absolutely no person was to be admitted to see the folios of the Codex during the years of the restoration, and this strict clause was always rigorously observed.
