 Open Up a Few Corpses
According to Foucault, Bichat is the first clinician to attempt to map the nosological classifications of disease onto/into the various interior surfaces revealed by cadaver dissection:
Bichat realized the importance of his new method, as is indicated by his lecture to medical students in 1803:
"With Bichat, the medical gaze pivots on itself and demands of death an account of life and disease, of its definitive immobility of their time and movements...But Bichat did more than free society of the fear of death.

A History of Science Volume IV - Part II   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
This was the division of all animal structures into what Bichat called tissues, and the pointing out that there are really only a few kinds of these in the body, making up all the diverse organs.
It had never been given explicit expression before the time of Bichat, though it is said that Bichat himself was somewhat indebted for it to his master, Desault, and to the famous alienist Pinel.
However that may be, it is certain that all subsequent anatomists have found Bichat's classification of the tissues of the utmost value in their studies of the animal functions.

Our statistic is based on 810 operated patients from 1975 to 1994 in Bichat Hospital and we distinguish: 1 - Paralysis by supraclavicular roots lesions (607 cases) * com-plete C5-C6-C7-C8-D1 paralysis is the most fre-quent one, being seen in 75 to 80% of the cases.
We concluded that it is interesting to repair very severe brachial plexus palsy if the patient is young, the delay less than 4 months, the patient able to understand limited goal and the surgeon trained to do this surgery.
C5-C6 and C5-C6-C7 palsies represents 20% of all the palsies and between 1984 and 1994, 27 cases of C5-C6 brachial plexus palsy and 43 cases of C5-C6-C7 were operated on in Bichat Hospital.

The New York Review of Books: REVOLUTION IN SCIENCE
The first is the reform of medicine associated with Xavier Bichat at the end of the eighteenth and beginning of the nineteenth centuries.
This witness wrote of the "astonishing revolution that is characterized by progress in pathological anatomy." I should add that in my criteria the contemporaneous witness need not be the principal investigator, especially since in many years of research I found less than twenty scientists who announced that their work was revolution-producing.
It is of no moment that he does not mention Bichat in this book, for it was written almost a decade earlier, and dated "germinal l'an III." But Cabanis did express much admiration for his colleague Bichat, even inserting a dolorous footnote in a book he was proofreading on the day of Bichat's death.
