But whereas Mitty desperately needed looking after (and his fantasies were, simply, denial of this reality), Bickleigh had married his wife for money and status and had to tolerate her dominance until he took steps to dispose of her (hence the book's title).
Bickleigh's fantasies were an escape from harsh reality and in a couple of pages (Chapter 2) Iles has him winning an international cricket match for England almost single-handed, performing life-saving surgery on the King, writing Bickleigh's Symphony in C, fighting in the War: 'Field Marshall Bickleigh....

Since Bickleigh isn't exactly the matinee idol type, one must assume that either village moral standards were extremely low or else Bickleigh was plying all his female patients with Spanish fly and giving their boy friends salt peter, all under the guise of headache remedies.

To assuage the pains of his marriage, Bickleigh is having an affair with Ivy Ridgeway [Lucy Brown], but when a new face arrives in town, he finds himself captivated by her – and her apparent appreciation of his artistic efforts.

Movie Info for Malice Aforethought on MSN Movies
The four-part British miniseries Malice Aforethought was based on a 1931 British crime novel, which in its time was considered innovative in that it revealed the identity and motive of the murderer from the outset (though this device had previously been used in a number of stage plays).
Saddled with a nagging and faithless wife (Judy Parfitt), Dr. Bickleigh formulated a complex scheme to do away with the woman in a way that would not only deflect suspicion from himself, but also lead his friends and neighbors to the conclusion that she richly deserved her demise.
Along the way, Bickleigh fell in love with the much-younger Gwynfryd (Cheryl Campbell), who was left completely in the dark so far as his murder plan was concerned -- a blissful ignorance which would, alas, have tragic consequences for the poor girl.
