Bicycle frame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A bicycle frame is the main component of a bicycle, onto which wheels and other components are fitted.
The modern and most common frame design for an upright bicycle is based on the safety bicycle, and is made of two triangles, a main triangle and a paired rear triangle.
Frame size was traditionally measured from the center of the bottom bracket to the top of the seat tube.

Bicycle - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
bicycles provide the principal means of transportation in many regions, are a popular form of recreation, and have been adapted for use in many other fields of human activity, including children's toys, adult fitness, military and local police applications, courier services, and cycle sports.

Bicycle manufacturing proved to be a training ground for other industries and led to the development of advanced metalworking techniques, both for the frames themselves and for special components such as ball bearings, washers, and sprockets.

 Howstuffworks "How Bicycles Work"
These bicycles became popular starting in 1870, but by the turn of the century were replaced by the "safety bicycle." A bicycle from 1900 or 1910 looks almost exactly like any bicycle you see today.
Today's bicycles have two wheels of the same reasonable size, a pair of pedals in the middle of the bike and then a chain that connects the pedals to the rear wheel.
The idea behind multiple gears on a bicycle -- whether it's an older "10-speed" bike or a modern mountain bike with 24 gears -- is to let you change the distance that the bike moves forward with each pedal stroke.

 Bicycle Frame Testing
The frames are tested with and without their intended forks by bolting them through their rear dropouts (suitably spaced) to a flat table and hanging masses from the bottom bracket as shown in the photographs.
Frames are as close to 55 cm in size as possible.
A conventional 531 steel frame gave the third least deflection and was stiffer than almost all the modern frames, although considerably heavier.

 Building Up a Bicycle Frame
Let me start by saying this is not about building a frame, this is about putting components onto a frame to build a bike.
Before I put this frame together I considered having the shell chased and faced, or whatever it is, by a LBS, but I figured the factory probably did a decent job, and I didn't want to get too perfectionistic about it.
The old frame had brake cable guides that included a bare cable run, which the new frame uses a full casing from front to rear.

 Bicycle Reform Awareness
If a bicycle frame is constructed with open front rear dropouts, it is possible for the action of pedaling alone to pull one side of the rear wheel axle loose and forward, stopping the rear tire against the inside of the bicycle frame against a chain stay.
Clearances between the frame of a bicycle and the moving parts of a bicycle are important.
A bicycle rear wheel axle loosened and pulled forward by the power of pedaling, while one end of the axle remains fixed to the bicycle, may be subject to deformation that can lead to unexpected stopping of the bicycle, due to breakage of the rear axle, at a later time.

Those who have a commercial interest in non-steel frames are usually quick to point to weight as a drawback÷an easy sell, since everybody has lifted a monstrously heavy steel frame at some time or other, and knows the feeling.
The percentage difference of the bare frame weights is up to 40 percent, which sounds considerable until you factor in the weight of the bike parts (another 17lbs), at which point it falls to about 9 percent.
Con: Despite theoretical structural possibilities and advantages, carbon fiber frames do not have an enviable record of reliability, and one continuing problem are the joints and connections.

 Bicycle Frame Spacing
Older frames designed for touring or recreational riding are often considerably more comfortable and pleasant to ride than many modern frames that have been optimized to appeal to racers.
A bicycle frame and fork should match the wheels that are to be used in it.
Ideally, the frame alignment should be made using a special fixture that clamps the frame by the sides of the bottom bracket shell, and takes those faces as the reference point for all other measurements.

Sears sells a large oxy-MAPP torch that can also do good frame brazing, but don't think of brazing a frame with one of the mini torches that use oxygen cylinders the size of a standard propane torch cylinder -- they have a very short burn time, a small flame, and are hideously expensive to use.
The most expensive tool most frame builders have is an adjustable jig for holding the frame tubes in position while brazing.
This leaves a small number of specialty tools used in the finishing of the frame after you build it, such as alignment tools, bottom bracket taps and facers, head tube mills and facers, and seat tube reamers.

The net result is that an aluminum frame winds up being lighter and stiffer than a steel one.
For mountain bikes, which have shocks to cushion the rider & reduce the loading on the frame, aluminum seems to be the material of choice for the vast majority of riders.
Though lighter, many cyclists think aluminum frames are too stiff, and prefer a steel frame which can flex a bit more.
