MoMA.org | The Collection | Marcel Duchamp. Bicycle Wheel. New York 1951 (third version, after lost original of 1913)
Bicycle Wheel is Duchamp's first Readymade, a class of artworks that raised fundamental questions about artmaking and, in fact, about art's very definition.
This example is actually an "assisted Readymade": a common object (a bicycle wheel) slightly altered, in this case by being mounted upside-down on another common object (a kitchen stool).
The original Bicycle Wheel was left behind in Paris when Duchamp sailed to New York in 1915.

Building Bicycle Wheels by Sheldon Brown
For lateral truing, spin the wheel in the stand and find the place on the rim that is farthest away from where most of the rim is. If the rim is off to the left, tighten spokes that go to the right flange and loosen those that go to the left flange.
Before a wheel is ready for the road it must be stress relieved, because the bend in the spoke has to accommodate itself to the shape of the hub flange and vice versa, and a similar process may go on where the nipple sits in the rim.
Bicycle folklore has it that radial-spoked wheels give a "harsh" ride, because the shorter spokes are less "stretchy" than the longer spokes used in semi-tangent wheels.

How Things Work - Bicycles   (Site not responding. Last check: )
When the wheels of a bicycle are attached directly to the frame of a bicycle, the wheels and frame must move together.
A sudden jolt of this sort is unpleasant--the seat of the bicycle pushes upward violently on the rider and the rider feels large forces throughout his or her body.
When the wheel of a bicycle with a spring suspension encounters a bump, the springs compress and the force on the frame and rider is much smaller.

Alameda Bicycle - Wheel Truing Basics
Bicycle wheels have come a long way since the days of wooden spokes and metal tires in the early 1800s when two-wheelers first appeared.
On a good wheel the spokes will feel evenly tensioned (note that on rear wheels, by design, the left-side spokes are not as tight as the right ones; what’s important is that the spokes on each side are evenly tensioned compared to each other).
Obviously, these instructions are for basic wheel repairs, however, it can be very satisfying to fix a wobbly wheel and it can make you a big hit with your friends if you can get their wheel round enough for them to keep riding when you’re out on the road or trail.

How to True a Wobbly Wheel
Originally, wheels were radial spoked, that is the spokes ran straight from the rim to the nearest part of the hub, but Starley discovered that tangential spokes (the spokes run at an angle to a part of the hub which faces another part of the rim) were much stronger, especially for the driving wheel.
On the front wheel (and some rear wheels), the spokes are the same length on both sides, but on most derailleur bikes, the spokes on the freewheel side are shorter and tighter to help center the wheel on the axle (they would otherwise be off-centered due to the space taken by the freewheel).
Sometimes the wheel may need major adjustments, but you are on a bike trip and just need to get home (or to the next stop first), but more often the wheel is basically OK but a wobble needs to disappear or a spoke needs to be tightened.

 Howstuffworks "How Bicycles Work"
Today's bicycles have two wheels of the same reasonable size, a pair of pedals in the middle of the bike and then a chain that connects the pedals to the rear wheel.
The first thing that causes bicycles to have gears is the fact that gears can reduce the wheel size from 7 feet in diameter to something reasonable.
The idea behind multiple gears on a bicycle -- whether it's an older "10-speed" bike or a modern mountain bike with 24 gears -- is to let you change the distance that the bike moves forward with each pedal stroke.

 Bicycle Wheel Performance
Any difference in acceleration due to bicycle wheels that is claimed by your riding buddies is primarily due to cognitive dissonance, or the placebo effect (they paid a lot of money for the wheels so there must be some perceivable gain).
In summary, wheels account for almost 10% of the total power required to race your bike and the dominant factor in wheel performance is aerodynamics.
Wheel mass is a second order effect (nearly 10 times less significant) and wheel inertia is a third order effect (nearly 100 times less significant).

Bicycle Repair - Building Bicycle Wheels
If your bicycle's wheel has broken one or more spokes at the hub, the spokes might be fatigued, and they will all need to be replaced.
Some rear wheels are built with slightly different length spokes between the right and left sides to better accommodate the wheel's dish.
Most wheels are built with a 3 or 4-cross pattern, and the spoke lengths will vary, so you'll have to know which pattern to use.

 Bicycle Wheel Review
This type of wheel, and any wheel for that matter, should last until the brake track is worn through – in my experience this is equivalent to 15,000 to 30,000 kilometers depending on how much you ride in the rain.
In general, wheel durability is diminished when spoke count is decreased, radial spoking patterns are used, non-steel spokes are used, and poor seals/undersized bearings are used.
Often times, the manufacturer will require you to send in the wheel to be serviced (meanwhile you are without your wheels) or you simply cannot even true the wheels due to extremely high spoke tensions and low spoke counts.

 History Timeline of the Bicycle
While the men were risking their necks on the high wheels, ladies, confined to their long skirts and corsets, could take a spin around the park on an adult tricycle.
The bicycles still had the hard rubber tires, and in the absence of the long, shock-absorbing spokes, the ride they provided was much more uncomfortable than any of the high-wheel designs.
Bicycling was so popular in the 1880s and 1890s that cyclists formed the League of American Wheelman (still in existence and now called the League of American Bicyclists).

To use the dial gauge, slide the magnetic mount toward the wheel until the shaft of the gauge is pressed in about half-way.
If you are truing a wheel with a tire mounted, you can leave the metal tip on the gauge and measure the out-of-true by placing the gauge tip directly against the side of the rim.

 Review of The Bicycle Wheel

Why is Marcel Duchamp's Bicycle Wheel Shaking On Its Stool?
The tilt of the wheel and fork (see Figure 1), one could argue, after examining Duchamp's 5 Bicycle Wheels and Stools, that none were ever in an equilibrium.
In fact, Duchamp would have had to glue the stools into their irregular shapes, and tie string to support the five Bicycle Wheels and Stools, in order to permit them even to stand, let alone spin.
After making the initial computer 3-D reconstructions of the Bicycle Wheel and Stool, ASRL has built physical models and will soon be broadcasting videos of the experimental results on the ASRL site.
