Bidah - its Evil and Refutation 1
Bid'ahs in the matters of life, like the new scientific inventions are permissible because originally, what is a matter of life or habit is permissible.
The prohibited Bid'ah is to innovate in the religion.
Consequently, every Bid'ah, that is introduced in the religion has to be rejected as for the reason that only Allaah and His Messenger (sallallahu alahi wa-sallam) have the right to legislate in the Sharee'ah.

Bidah (innovation), along with ignorance, and following one's desires, are among the chief causes of disunity which currently plagues the Muslims.
In commencing our pursuit of understanding this topic of bidah, we begin in the tradition of the scholars of Islam who always initiate their discourse with definitions of terminology, both linguistic (from an Arabic standpoint) and legal (from a Shariah standpoint).
While linguistically Umar’s action is indeed a bidah, from the Shariah standpoint it is not a bidah as it has some foundation in the Shariah, which is the same cited action of the Prophet (saw) establishing taraweeh in congregation.

It was "bid`ah" in doctrine that led to the deification of Christ, and likewise it was bid`ah in law that led to the concept that Allah consults with the rabbis in planning the affairs of this world.
Bid`ah is now so widespread, so rampant, that people take it to be sunnah and treat sunnah as if it is bid’ah.
Examples of prevalent bid`ah are: the "40-day work" for the deceased, ta’azim for the Prophet and his Companions, and communal recitation of the Qur'an.

Another group of scholars argues that bid'ah is to be limited only to matters of worship and should not be extended to 'living traditions,' for that may lead to making every concept of living, not known at they time of the Prophet, including food, drinks, clothes, language, and new occurrences, liable to being labeled bid'ah.

The meaning of bid`ah is that which has been invented and has no root in the Sharee`ah pointing to it.
As for what has a root in the Sharee`ah pointing to it it is not legally (technically) a bid`ah; even though linguistically the term bid`ah may be applied to it.
As for the istihsaan (approval and condoning) of bid`ah, which occurred in the words of the predecessors, then that is in relation to bid`ah al-logawee (linguistic use of bid`ah) and not in the legal (technical) use of the term bid`ah.

 Celebrating Birthdays
A Bid`ah is a new act [which also implies a modification, in any way, of an existing act], which is introduced in religion or is, in some way given a religious significance without the authority and the substantiation of the Qur’an or the Sunnah.
Thus, celebrating birthdays would be termed as “bid`ah” only when their celebration is considered a religious event.
We are aware of the fact that, generally, celebrating birthdays is not given any religious significance, and therefore they cannot fall under the category of bid`ah.

Many people today are unaware of the many innovations (bid'ah) that have entered the religion, nor the importance of staying away from them.
It is now common to see the people who speak out against innovations, being abused and vilified, and accused of being backed by Saudi Arabia etc. So we felt it our duty, as part of enjoining the good and forbidding the evil, to clarify the position of Ahl us-Sunnah wal Jamaa'ah regarding this important subject.
The word bid'ah here is to be understood in its linguistic sense, "something new," because tarawih in one congregation was not present during the rule of Abu Bakr and the beginning of 'Umar's rule, hence in that sense it was something new.
