With its sagging roof, crumbling plasterwork and rotting timbers, Grade II-listed Biddulph Grange, near Congleton, Cheshire, was in 'a dire state of disrepair' when Yorkshire developers Shepherd Homes bought the Victorian mansion some four years ago.
It was a far cry from its heyday in the early 1900s, when an article in Country Life (January 7, 1905) extolled the beauty of its 15 acres of wonderful gardens ('long recognised as among the most perfect of their kind in England'), created over a period of 60 years by previous owner James Bateman.
While Biddulph Grange became a hospital and eventually slid into total decline, its famous garden was bought by the National Trust in 1988 and, after careful restoration, opened to the public in 1991.
