And the appearance of this four-disc set is a cause of celebration for admirers of the indomitable violist in its comprehensive collection of all his Columbia discs — and, unannounced on the cover, the single issued side of his 1947 HMV session.
There’s the Tertis-arranged Dohnányi C sharp minor, recorded in November 1925 with Bendigo-born William Murdoch and the Bach Chaconne from 1924.
This had already been recorded for Columbia by its dedicatee Albert Sammons with Evlyn Howard Jones at the piano in a late acoustic, so Columbia must have relished the opportunity to issue a Tertis-arranged electric five years later.

As for the recording itself, although pre-high fidelity, the sound is immediate and forceful, and clearly conveys the ambient acoustics of Boston's Symphony Hall.
I've recently purchased a copy from a local record store, and though the editing is seamlessly achieved from the original lacquer discs, it does sound as though Biddulph's re-recording engineers have used noise reduction methods which have clipped off much of the higher frequencies.
However, do not let this drive you away; There is quite enough of the original recording intact to bring you hours of pleasure listening to Koussevitzky's ambient rendition of both these pieces.

 Revisiting Pablo Casals
To revisit the recordings of Pablo Casals is an unalloyed pleasure, one that still yields fresh insights after many years of studying and playing many of the same works that were his favorites.
Some of his best performances are the acoustic recordings made from 1916-1925 (collected in Pablo Casals: The Complete Acoustic Recordings, Vols.1-3, Biddulph Recordings, LAB 141-3.) Even in their re-mastered condition, considerable surface noise is present, but if one has patience, there are riches to discover.
When one considers how much Casals recorded in 1938 and 1939, in addition to his usual touring and the strains of the war years, it is not surprising to find a performance here and there that is less successful.
