Biddulph Valley Way links into the Gritstone Trail, a 56km/35mile walk from Disley to Kidsgrove through some of the most rugged and spectacular scenery in Cheshire.
Biddulph Valley Way is a short walk along the canal towpath from Congleton railway station.
Biddulph Valley Way is owned by Congleton Borough Council and managed on their behalf by Cheshire County Council Countryside Management Service.

The presence of large collieries in the valley eventually led to an expansion of the urban environment - as is often the case with industry.
The colliery was formerly known as the Biddulph Valley Coal and Ironworks, and during the opencasting operation the blast furnaces of the bar iron works came to light.

Ascent: Nil Ascent: Local facilities in Congleton and Biddulph Distance: 6 miles The Walk This walk commences at Brook Street (The A54) just 5 minutes walk from Congleotn town centre and 15 minutes form the railway station (very poor transport link between the station and the town centre).
You will notice that the viaduct carrying the railway over the valley is very very tall and impressive and is worth taking a few pictures and admiring for a while.
The Biddulph Valley Way is an ideal starting place for exploring the surrounding countryside.

Today in early May was to be the big ascent of the Congleton Edge ridge into the Biddulph Valley.
I savoured the descent down into Biddulph, delighting in the spring flowering gardens along the way and was soon at The Gardens.
This is an 8 mile traffice free route for walker, horse riders and cyclists from Biddulph to Congleton and was once a railway line.

Janet Stephenson and I rode along the Biddulph Valley Way, which provides approximately 15 miles of off road riding - some of it very pretty and some of it not so good for horses but still safe for riding.
Progressing through to Staffordshire via Biddulph and Brindley Ford, the track crosses a couple of minor roads, where care needs to be taken but these roads are fairly quiet.
There is a car park at Gillow Heath on Smokies Way which is convenient for a ride in either direction and can accommodate horseboxes.

I have arrived at an interesting time with the National Cycleway funding offering many opportunities for cycle routes, and I certainly hope to be able to achieve many improvements on the Biddulph Valley Way over the coming years.
In the next month or two there will be a number of structural improvements taking place with the reinstatement of the bridleway between the viaduct and the canal bridge, and a number of access and fencing projects.
After this my priority will be the surface of the track, and hopefully with next year's Cycleway funding I will be able to resurface the worst stretch of the Biddulph Valley Way from the railway viaduct to the Staffordshire border.

As a highway authority the County Council is responsible for the provision of a safe and efficient road network and for the management of the public rights of way network.
The requirement which the Act places on local authorities to produce a Rights of Way Improvement Plan (ROWIP) should assist in the development of a more integrated network of routes for riders across Cheshire (although the ROWIP is intended to be more wide ranging than just simply route development).
The principle adopted for the off-road sections of the network is one of up grading the routes for a variety of different user, where possible.
