Bidens is a member of the Asteraceae (formerly called Compositae) family, which is one of the dominant families of plants contributing medicinal species not only in China but worldwide.
Bidens tripartita (longbacao), which has been known for many centuries as a remedy for chronic dysentery, was used in a clinical trial to treat 500 cases of dysentery, 65 cases of acute enteritis, 248 cases of chronic enteritis (15).
Bidens is a popular herb in China, mainly used as a folk medicine, meaning that it is collected and used by laypersons to treat common ailments: dysentery, skin diseases, poisonous bites.

Bidens amplissima is a rare Pacific Northwest endemic species that is found only in coastal areas in British Columbia and adjacent Washington State.
In BC, Bidens amplissima is found on Vancouver Island as far north as Campbell River, and in the lower Fraser Valley in municipalities such as Vancouver, Richmond, Surrey, Delta, Coquitlam, Pitt Meadows and Aldergrove.
Habitat for this species is the narrow alluvial shoreline margins of rivers and ponds, in bogs and willow wetlands, and in the tidal reaches of the Fraser River in British Columbia: at least one station occurs in an old riverbed.

Bidens heterophylla was the name attached to the plant at the time, a name which the USDA Plants Database reports is a synonym of Bidens aurea.
It is a white flower similar to Bidens aurea and is commonly known as Spanish needles or tickseed.
I am constantly amazed at the variety of insects that feed on both the nectar and pollen of the flowers, ranging from myriad butterflies and moths to honeybees, wasps and a type of beetle that creates a foam at the base of the flower (I haven't identified that beetle).
