  Bidu Sayao - Brazilian Artist
Upon Bidu Sayao's return visit to the States, the board of the Metropolitan Opera (at Toscanini's insistence) tapped the busy soprano to appear in a part not generally associated with South American artists: that of Jules Massenet's wholly and beguilingly Gallic young heroine, the beautiful and coquettish Manon Lescaut.
Bidu Sayao's Recordings Few recordings exist from these years, and whatever early successes she enjoyed are eclipsed by vivid documents (some in sound as well as photos) of her performances at the Metropolitan Opera (where she sang for 16 seasons, beginning in 1937), San Francisco, and Chicago.
Though the voice remained agile and fresh throughout Bidu Sayao's career, on these recordings there is a brighter edge to the tone, and an easier access to the upper reaches of her range.

Bidu won many presents as souvenirs from the place and left many memories for these wonderful people, who didn’t know what else to do to please her, as an official guest.
Bidu was received onboard with a musical band and all the authorities from there, who drived her in the Governor’s cars.
Bidu gave her 1st Concert in the Amazonas Theater of Manaus, which is extremely beautiful and was crowded.

Playful and tomboyish, with a unique flair for fun and mischief, the incorrigible Bidu was never to attend public school with the other children of her age group; she was instead to receive private tutoring at her mother's home up through the age of 16.
Bidu went on to perform there in various works, including the part of Sister Madalena in the opera of the same name by, of all people, her uncle Alberto, a sentimental payback of sorts for his having served as the family intermediary ten years prior.
Sayao's commercial discs of Manon's arias are exemplars of characterization, technical virtuosity and tonal purity, but in three preserved broadcasts she gives full rein to her passionate nature, yet maintains vocal poise.

 Bidu Sayao (Brazilian Classical Music)
Bidu Sayão is considered the best Brazilian soprano ever and certainly one of the most taltented singers of the 20th century.
For two decades, Bidu Sayou, the petite Brazilian soprano, won the devotion of Metropolitan Opera audiences for her bright, silvery sound, clear diction, and discreet passion.
The lovely Brazilian soprano, Bidu Sayao, who was born in 1902 (and still with us), had a small, silvery, and very expressive voice.

The “warbler from Brazil”: so was called the soprano that, on February the 13th, 1937, carried away the parquet of the Metropolitan with her interpretation of Manon, of Jules Massenet (the label Naxos owns, on its catalog, the documentation of this historical night).
It was Bidu who gave Villa-Lobos the idea to transform in vocalise for so-prano the magic melody, initially written for soprano, of the Bachianas Brasileiras nº 5.
In 1959, Bidu would be also a soloist, in the record of the Floresta do Amazonas, originally conceived as the soundtrack the movie Green Mansions and, afterwards, converted into an oratory.

Bidu Sayao in program of opera arias from the 1940s
Like that of many old record collectors, my first impression of Brazilian soprano Bidu Sayao (1902-1999) derives from a 78 rpm CBS inscription from 1945 of the aria from Villa-Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5, with the composer leading a consort of eight celli which included Leonard Rose.
Sayao reigned as a leading lyric soprano at the Metropolitan Opera from 1938-1951, a tenure which embraced her signature roles as Mimi, Susanna, Zerlina, and Juliet.
The sweet legato of Sayao’s voice distils liquid purity from any musical line, as we witness in Adieu, notre petite table, with its diverse nuances of emotion; then the segue into the gavotte Obeissons quand leur voix appelle, requiring light chromatic leaps and elegant diction.

Rosa Ponselle wrote in her biography that Sayao's pianissimi were "unequalled in my experience", the finest she had ever heard.
Bidu Sayao is probably best-known today for the famous recording of the Hector Villa-Lobos piece that opens this disc--which is a tragedy, since this piece (though exquisite) shows only one side of her vocal artistry.
Although her performance on the Villa-Lobos is quite keening and melancholy, Bidu Sayao was best-known during the height of her career for her command of the French repertoire, which usually called for great charm and flirtatiousness.

Sayao had a relatively small voice, but it was often said of her that despite this one could easily hear her from the very back of the old Met, even during a chorus, so careful and unique was her phrasing and style.

Sayao was simply one ot the great singers of the century who was not given the opportunity to record her vast repetoire-- she was a great interpreter of the French song literature--was there a better singer of Debussy?
She sang Lucia, Lakme, Zerbinetta --Bellini, Mozart, Verdi and Puccini so what we have is a small but precious souvenir.
