Bidwell Park is by far the greatest and most lasting contribution Gen. John and Annie Bidwell, Chico's founders, made to the community.
The park is governed by the city of Chico through the Bidwell Park and Playground Commission and therefore, as per Annie's wishes when she deeded the park to the city, there shall be no glass containers, alcohol or hunting (except to remove noxious animals) anywhere in the park.
Besides being the interpretive center for Bidwell Park, the center is home to a Living Animal Museum and wildlife display, free nature walks and events, year-round interactive exhibits and spring and summer camp sessions and educational programs for children.

Bidwell Park, located east of the city of Chico (map), is the second largest municipal park in the United States.
Chico Formation: The oldest rocks in the park are those of the Chico formation which can be seen at the east end of the park.
The Chico formation consists of sandstone, siltstone, thin layers of limestone, and conglomerate, all of which accumulated along the shore of the ocean during the Cretaceous period of the Mesozoic Era.

John Bidwell was a rancher, politician, philanthropist, and amateur botanist and geologist.
The Bidwells met John Muir on an 1877 botanical expedition to Mt. Shasta and the headwaters of the Sacramento River with famed Harvard botanist Asa Gray and his wife, and British botanist Sir Joseph Hooker.
With additional lands added later, Bidwell Park is now one of the largest city parks in the country; certainly the largest on a per capita basis.

Park Director Dennis Beardsley said it was the biggest control fire they have ever had in Upper Park, burning 1,500 of Upper Park's 3,000 acres.
The fire was ignited at the Upper Park Road and burned up the canyon to the North Rim Trail.This stopped the Browns Fire that threatened residential areas north of the park, as well as the Bidwell Park Golf Course.
Fires were lit at the Upper Park Road with the goal in mind to stop the fire at the North Rim Trail, Beardsley said.

The Bidwell Park Endowment Fund has been set up through the North Valley Community Foundation to provide a long-term, sustainable source of additional income, assisting the City of Chico in the operation and support of Bidwell Park.
