Biei and Furano are two towns in the long valley on the western side of Diasetsuzan National Park.
The towns are known for their rolling hills covered in all kinds of flowers, especially lavender.
We were about 4 weeks early for the flowers, but we were blessed with perfect weather and views over green hills all the way to the snow covered mountains.

Regrettably, however, most tourists are temporary sightseers and the mayor of Biei city is trying to make use of the city's brand name and turn the Biei region into a place for "green tourism" and eventually for a longer-term stay for visitors to enjoy engaging in agriculture.
Hence the challenge for the Biei mayor to revive agriculture and maintain scenic views for tourism.
Although the initial plan by Biei City has not yet resulted in the region being recognized as a Special Structural Reform Zone-partly due to opposition by anti-reform forces-the mayor will keep trying to obtain approval based on the recent designation of Biei's scenery by the Culture Agency as important for agriculturally-related culture.

Unfortunately that farm was all I got to see in Furano, which also has an ice milk factory and other tourist spots of varying interest with free samples of their goods.
Even the area around its train station looked very nice, despite the weird American suburb impression it gave me. While I waited to be picked up I checked out the nearby tourist information centre, which was pleasant and extremely clean and calm, before returning to the train station's unaircondtioned Waiting Room.
From Biei station, I headed to Furano to take the Lavender Express back to Sapporo for the uncertain chance of once again meeting a specific cutie.
