		Always tempted to feel a paternal or proprietary right over Louisiana, Bienville was obliged to sail in the summer of 1725 for the mother country he hardly knew; the company judged that “it was not suitable to its interests” to retain him in office in Louisiana.

		Louisiana was ignored for nearly a century and a half, until France's King Louis XIV, the "Sun King," began encouraging exploration of the Mississippi River in order to enlarge his own empire and halt Britain's and Spain's expansion.
		Bienville had to delay creating a permanent settlement on the lower Mississippi River until 1718, when he founded the city of New Orleans on a crescent-shaped section of the river 100 miles from the mouth.
		While a French colony, Louisiana was governed alternately by the crown and by several chartered proprietors, who contracted with the crown for administration of the colony and a trade monopoly in exchange for settlers and slaves to supply the colony with goods.

		Bienville, sometimes called "the Father of Louisiana," is born at Montreal, Canada, son of Charles and Catherine (Primot) Le Moyne, and one of a family of fourteen children: Charles, Jr.
		As a result of a another conspiracy against him, Bienville is ordered to France to answer accusations, and Boisbriant is sent down from Fort Chartres to administer the affairs of the colony until the arrival of Gov. Etienne Perier, who assumes the duties of the office in October, 1726.
		Bienville, who is now 68 years old, is unsuccessful in an expedition against the Chicasaws and is replaced by the Marquis de Vaudreuil.
