Biertan is mentioned for the first time in a written document in 1283.
The fortified church of Biertan was built in the place of on old basilica at the end of the 15th century with architectural elements from the late-Gothic and renaissance style.
The second enclosure was erected in the 15th century and the third one as well as the 8 towers and the bastions were built during the 16th century.

Biertan is one of the first German settlements in Transylvania placed between the two "Seats" (Medias and Seica) in the Andreean Diploma from 1224.
For 300 years Biertan was chosen as the residence of the Evangelic Diocese (1572-1867).
The main edifice of the ensemble is a hall-church with three naves, with arches disposed in a network, built between 1492 - 1516 on the place of another old church, in the late Gothic style, with elements from the Renaissance architecture at some portals.

Biertan (German Birthälm, Hungarian Berethalom) is a commune in central Romania in the north of the Sibiu County, 80 km north of Sibiu and 15 km east of Mediaş.
The first documentary testimony about the village is from 1283 in a document about the taxes paid by the inhabitants of 7 villages.
It is one of the most visited villages in Transylvania being the place of the annual reunion of the Transylvanian Saxons.

BIERTAN village lies in a southern valley of Copsa Mare, 11km from the Medias - Sighisoara road.
In the earthquake of 1977 the church was severely damaged: the choir vaults had to be re-built, the middle pillars of the gothic windows and the organ restored.

The Rural Castle and the Evangelic Fortified Church from Richis.(smaller village belonging to Biertan, situated at 6 km from its center, on the districtual road 141 B).
It is a wonderful three naves Gothic basilica with special elements of architecture and sculpture.

The clavichord is unsigned and undated, but documents given to the museum with the instrument in the 1920’s indicate that it is the work of the Saxon-Transylvanian musician and organ builder, Samuel Maetz of Biertan.
Samuel Maetz was born in Hosman village in 1760 and spent most of his life in Biertan (with one year abroad).
During his time in Sighisoara, Edmund Handy took the opportunity to visit Hosman to see the Maetz organ of which there are a number of other examples in the area.
