BNR Metal Pages -- Saxon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Biff Byford and Paul Quinn came over from another band, and when Pete Gill signed up, the classic lineup was born.
They changed name to Saxon right before their first album, and by the time of Wheels Of Steel they were regarded as one the leaders of the fledgling NWOBHM movement.
A final court settlement was reached in October 2003, awarding naming rights to Biff's group, with the other faction allowed to continue as Oliver Dawson Saxon.

Biff Byford tragedy - Planetblaze.com Forums
Biff was able to rescue his wife and their four small children.
Unfortunately it is impossible for Biff to leave his wife and kids alone at home, because the children have suffered a traumatic experience and they are frightened that there will be more fires in the future (the youngest are 5 year old and cannot understand of course).
as for biff byford he must be so gutted because you cant replace sentimental value items and he is so lucky to have everyone come out alive but i really feel for him.

The days of the group seemed numbered with the end of their recording contract and for the next two years things were quiet in the Saxon camp, until they emerged in 1991 with a new deal with SPV and the release of 'Solid Ball Of Rock'.
Biff Byford still sings like he's got his left nut trapped in his leather strides and guitarists Doug Scarratt and Paul Quinn whip up a veritable storm - both 'Dragon's Lair' and 'Running For The Border' are especially feisty.
Saxon, featuring original vocalist Biff Byford, fellow remaining original member guitarist Paul Quinn, second guitarist Doug Scaratt, and the rhythm section of Nibbs Carter (bass) and drummer Fritz Randow (ex-Victory and Sinner) have confirmed a UK tour in October.

This lineup features the ageless Biff Byford, together with guitar mainstay Paul Quinn, and their last recording with disgruntled guitar player Graham Oliver.
Although Oliver is listed on the album’s credits, the liner notes by Biff state that his last show with the band was New Year’s Eve 1994, and guitar on the record was played by Rainer Haensel.
Biff’s crystal clear vocals sail around the wailing dual axe attack, the drums and bass hold up the whole thing like Atlas with that big blue marble.

 Saxon Interview
I was fortunate enough to hook up with lead throat Biff Byford this past October for a chat about the past, the present and the future of Saxon.
Biff: American radio took certain rock songs and labeled them "heavy metal," but many were a far cry from metal.
Biff: Actually, our first time in America was on tour with Rush...that had to be around 1980, during the Wheels of Steel tour.

Its no secret to SAXON fans that the group featuring original members Biff Byford (vocals) and Paul Gibbs (guitar) is the one and only true SAXON.
Joining Biff Byford and Paul Gibbs for this performance are Nibbs Carter (bass), Doug Scarratt (guitar), and Fritz Randow (drums).
In both soundtracks, vocalist Biff Byford’s vocals are slightly underwhelmed.

Saxon (band) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Their original line up consisted of Peter "Biff" Byford on vocals, Paul Quinn and Graham Oliver on guitars, Steve Dawson on bass and drummer Pete Gill.
Early in their career the band changed their name from "Son of a Bitch" to Saxon, and gained support slots on tour with more established bands such as Motörhead.
Dawson has claimed that the character of Derek Smalls from the spoof-metal band Spinal Tap was strongly influenced by him, particularly his prominent facial hair and his penchant for playing to the gallery by fingering his bass with his left hand while throwing a mano cornuto with his right.

Graham Oliver (guitar) and Steve Dawson (bass) are on one side and Biff Byford (vocals) and Paul Quinn (guitar) are on the other.
Byford and Quinn continued as Saxon long after Dawson exited the fold, and did the same after Oliver was supposedly sacked.
He certainly isn't on the same level of Biff Byford, and it's a glaring weakness for Oliver/Dawson Saxon, especially when they perform so many Saxon songs.

I talked to Biff about that a long time ago and he said it wasn't the name they were fighting over it was money.
Biff Byford should get it because he was the most visible member of Saxon, but Oliver and Dawson make up more of the band than him alone, so does numbers alone make the difference?
But with Saxon, Oliver and Dawson started a band and Paul Quinn and Biff Byford joined and then they became Saxon before their first album was released.

It was definitely a huge surprise that they even bothered coming over as Biff Byford already announced in the early stage of the gig that they loose a lot of money when coming over, but it is great to see the wild and enthusiastic crowd.
That seemed not to dismiss the general atmosphere of the gig at all, just on the contrary as becoming and turning to be quite intensive especially when Biff encouraged and demanded people to bang their heads.
In general as for the vocalist Biff Byford's stage appearance, he really is a showman in every meaning of the word.

Pretty much the same can be said of every aspect of their new, haunting album, "Lionheart." From their impressive songwriting with its powerful sounds and ambitioned lyrics about witch hunters, King Richard Lionheart and the attitude of British soldiers towards war, to their striking cover artwork, Saxon unequivocally stand by their origins.
Byford rightly explains: "Lionheart is the most powerful album we've ever recorded.

Vocalist Biff kicks you while you're down, his voice carrying like a foghorn in a peasouper and capable of shattering bullet proof glass at 60 paces.
Biff then goes on to explain about the anti-violence, anti-war aspects of 'Street Fighting Gang' and 'Machine Gun' and I'm intrigued by the various unexpectedly subtle points that Saxon are trying to put across.
Biff doesn't agree, but I argue, that if Saxon really want to be the 'loudest band in the world' then it won't matter what the hell he vocalises, it's all just going to be one almighty noise anyway.

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - SAXON Name Dispute Settled
The long-running legal battle over the SAXON band name between the group's current vocalist Biff Byford and fellow original members Graham Oliver and Steve Dawson appears to finally be over.
"This now settles the ongoing dispute over the name in Biff Byford's favour as in effect the Order which was approved by the Court on 25th September 2003 enables Biff Byford's band and that band alone to use the SAXON name by itself, together with the traditional SAXON logo and SAXON eagle.
This should bring the long-running battle over the name to a significant conclusion and Biff Byford and the rest of the band have declared themselves very satisfied indeed with the outcome." View the court-issued "Consent Order": Page#1, Page#2, Page#3.

 ROCKSTAR :: traccia del giorno
