 Recycling Bin 27 - Crossing the Line with Big Bang Comics (Jul 2000)
Image Comics, although a onetime pioneer in whatever comprised the "New Comics" of the early 1990s, found a market some might not have predicted: the hard-core retro comics fan interested in material that one might place in a comics canon as the key defining pieces of various comics eras, particularly the Silver Age.
While Big Bang Comics deals in themed pieces not particularly tied to specific earlier comics, including the one-page humor vignette typical of sixties comics (from a day where comics took themselves less seriously), one feature in the book, as evidenced in issue #31, raises some questions about the role and limits of derivative comics.
Comics consumers who read Batman through the seventies would probably remember, either through originals or through the numerous reprints that persisted into the Ford presidency, the Batman stories from Dick Sprang's tenure on the title.

Comics came close to a return to those moments of playful glory during a cross-over involving The Flash III and Rex the Wonder Dog, with the mention of the Bureau of Altered Animals, but unfortunately, that idea seems to have been forgotten.

 The Blitz (Big Bang Comics)
Big Bang Comics is an attempt to recapture the feel of DC’s Silver Age.
His counterpart, on a parallel Earth, is also called The Blitz and wears a yellow-and-green costume, and is (presumably) an homage to Jay Garrick, as his adventures take place in the 1940s with the Knights of Justice, while the RTA has its adventures in the 1960s and afterwards.

The early issues were published by Caliber, but most issues have been published by Image.
They recreate the golden age and silver age of comics, with a heavy bias towards D.C. and a smattering of Marvel and Fawcett.
Most stories take place on Earth A, where it is the 1960's, or on Earth B, where it is the 1940's (hence, the Golden age heroes are no older than the Silver age ones).

Binana, the Wicked Worm, and Grandfather Clock.

I spent the 1980s writing and editing the b&w comic Megaton, trying to learn what the hell I was doing and how to do it better.
JOHN DALTON: Your book Big Bang Comics pays tribute to the Golden and Silver Ages of comics, a trend reflected in many comics today.
My guess is most of the independents will disappear for a while, and the big companies will go to returns in some way to survive until comics reinvent themselves in a viable new format.
