Big Basin: Oldest state park a top campground in U.S. BIG BASIN — A national organization’s award confirms what locals have known for years: Big Basin is a spectacular place to pitch a tent or hike.
Mary Hazel, acting State Parks supervising ranger for Big Basin, said headquarters "has always been a concern, because it’s the oldest park of the park." Historic buildings date from between 1934 and 1938, and that’s where many of the old-growth redwoods are, Hazel said, so it’s important to not overuse the area.
William Dall, park superintendent for the Mountain Sector of the Santa Cruz District of the State Parks, recommends if you’re eager to camp at Big Basin, try the "shoulder seasons" of spring and fall.
