In Big Bend, the sediments deposited during the Cambrian were primarily sandstones, limestones, and dolomites.
Big Bend is still covered in shallow seas, but the character of sedimentation changes slightly to include shales (in addition to chert, limestone, and sandstone deposition).

Perhaps the most famous of Big Bend's fossil treasures from this period is the giant flying reptile, Quetzalcoatlus northropi, with a wingspan over 35 feet.

But nothing about Big Bend is totally predictable, and the temperature can vary from the 90's to the 30's - sometime within a 24-hour period.

Big Bend Ranch is by far the largest state park in Texas, and probably the least well-known, since it lies in the most remote part of the state, occupying a large part of the desert west of Big Bend National Park.
The land is mostly roadless, with harsh, irregular terrain and extreme temperatures most of the year - Presidio and Lajitas, the two small towns at either side, often vie to be the hottest place in Texas, and sometimes (in spring and early summer) in the whole US.
The ranch after which the area is named is located nearby, but the Solitario may only be reached by a drive along unpaved roads followed by a lengthy hike.

For a while, even the big 3-D model at Panther Junction had the boundaries wrong and it still seems to indicate that the park boundary includes a large private ranch.
At one point it was very incorrect, but the Big Bend Map at GORP is now partially correct.
