Big Bend is still covered in shallow seas, but the character of sedimentation changes slightly to include shales (in addition to chert, limestone, and sandstone deposition).
Big Bend's geologic history is quite unique, a mixture of placid ocean deposition, murky swamps with large reptiles, and violent earth-shaking volcanic eruptions.
In Big Bend, the sediments deposited during the Cambrian were primarily sandstones, limestones, and dolomites.

 Big Bend National Park air study released
This conclusion is part of the Big Bend Regional Aerosol and Visibility Observational (BRAVO) study report released last week by the U.S. EPA, the National Park Service (NPS) and the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
The BRAVO study to assess the causes of haze at Big Bend involved intensive monitoring from July through October 1999 followed by a four-year data analysis and modeling effort.
The study found that on the worst days, visibility-reducing sulfates from states to the east and north of Texas were responsible for approximately 22 percent of the man-made haze at the park.

The definitive Big Bend hike is most likely the South Rim trail (here's the GORP trail description and map, and here's my description of an overnight hike along it).
Major changes over the last twenty or so years include the collection of an entrance fee (in addition to camping fees for overnight stays), the increase in visitation (although those who have been to Yosemite, Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon would scoff at this), and the increase in river travel, particularly packaged river expeditions.

 Welcome To Marathon Texas - Big Bend National Park
Marathon achieved new importance when Big Bend National Park opened in 1947 and it was officially designated the "Gateway to the Big Bend." Local daredevil pilot Bill Hargus that same year inaugurated the road to the park, now U.S. 385, by cutting the ribbon with his plane's propeller.
It also had the first school in the Big Bend (the adobe schoolhouse now houses the Marathon Historical Museum), churches, a taxi service, a blacksmith shop, a general store and two hotels.
Marathon was named in 1882 by retired sea captain, railroad surveyor and local landowner Albion Shepard, who said the locale, a high desert basin surrounded by mountains, reminded him of the famous Marathon in Greece, from which runner Phidippides ran 26.2 miles to tell Athenians of their victory against the Persians in 490 BC.
