  [KFCC] Junji Ito Article
His relationship with Big Comic Spirits Weekly (a thick publication aimed primarily at a young teenage male audience) has since become more regular, with Ito publishing Uzumaki in Spirits starting in 1998 and again running a series in Spirits in 2001 with Gyo.
Despite the number of movies adapted from Junji Ito's comics and the current release of many of his individual comics in the Horror Collection, it would be a mistake to assume that Ito has gained widespread popularity in Japan.
Gyo, his most recent comic, is being published second last in the 300+ page Spirits Weekly, his horror collection is only available new at specialty stores or by mail order, much as it is in the United States, and Japanese audiences are still largely unaware of his movies despite the quarterly nature of their release.

Life at Maison Ikkoku -Manga History   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Because Big Comic Spirits is a bi-weekly magazine Takahashi only had to work on two chapters a month instead of four, but she was under an increased workload as it was, because she was writing and drawing Urusei Yatsura in Shonen Sunday throughout Maison Ikkoku's entire run (not an easy feat!!).
The American distribution rights are handled by Viz Communications, one of the leading manga translation companies which is owned by Shogakukan and as of 2002, Shueisha.
A comic book was released every month that collected two chapters from the series.

Uzumaki - Interviews > Junji Ito, pg 1   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-26)
Born July 31, 1963 in Gifu-ken, Japan, Junji Ito was a dental technician and aspiring manga artist when his first "Tomie" manga won the Kazuo Umezu Award in the mid '80s — Umezo, Japan's undisputed "god of horror manga" was one of the judges and Ito was on his way.
Few, though, expected Ito to become what he is, Japan's reigning horror manga artist and the "new Kazuo Umezu." He became known in particular for his unkillable Tomie series and the more recent (and very popular) Uzumaki (Whirlpool) series which ran in the widely-circulated Big Comic Spirits.
Q: Horror comics in America are a minor field, although they were once extremely popular in the 1950s.

In that way, it's Lovecraftian, and Lovecraft would approve of the way in which spiral galaxies figure into one story (although Ramsey Campbell's The Voice of the Beach is an even closer match).
