 BIG FISH
Tim Burton's Big Fish is a lot like that Federal Express commercial where the young office worker suggests using the overnight delivery company to save money and then tells the story of his claim to fame until the day he dies.
Fish, which is inexplicably rated PG-13 despite being the best family film since the similarly-rated Whale Rider, invokes the memories of a lot of other films, despite being original enough to not be considered a cheap knockoff.
Fish is a big step in the right direction for screenwriter John August (he adapted Daniel Wallace's novel) after following up the brilliant Go with the two Charlie's Angels flicks.

 Filmtracks: Big Fish (Danny Elfman)
Big Fish: (Danny Elfman) When it comes to a project like Big Fish, you have to stop for a moment and be appreciative of the fact that the partnership between director Tim Burton and composer Danny Elfman is once again alive and well.
With lavish production values, Big Fish is the story of a dying father in Alabama who has spent a lifetime telling his son tall tales about his own youth, with most of the tales far too bizarre to be true.
The personality of Big Fish is driven by the fiddle and other specialty instruments meant to bring out the Southern lifestyle, and this is a touch that Elfman has rarely employed since Sommersby and Black Beauty.

 Big Fish (2003): Reviews
Big Fish is a clever, smart fantasy that targets the child inside every adult, without insulting the intelligence of either.
Big Fish of course is a great-looking film, with a fantastical visual style that could be called Felliniesque if Burton had not by now earned the right to the adjective Burtonesque.
What is most disappointing about Big Fish is the nervousness of its fantasizing--a strange unwillingness, new in Burton's work, to trust the wit of the audience.

We were fishing on March 18 and 19, 2004, for one day and one night at the Bang Pakong River mainly for the Grey Eel Catfish (Plotosius canius) and the Freshwater Stingray(Himantura chaophraya) with 2 English friends and return clients, Bruce Dale and Terry Robert Mather.
This kind of fishing tackle was far to be the best to fight a stingray and I wondered many times if my highly bent rod was going to break next or to be strong enough to take the kind of punishment it was displaying.
The 2 last fish landed were hooked by legendary European angler friends whom we had the privilege to guide during their stays.

Big Fish is about many things (life, death, love, dreams, fathers and sons, reconciliation) but it’s a particularly compelling statement about the art of storytelling, about “the power of myth” (to borrow a line from Bill Moyers) and its ability to transport, enlighten and entertain us.

Tim Burton Dreams - Big Fish - A novel by Daniel Wallace - movie directed by Tim Burton
The bond between parent and child is often thought to be the strongest there is, they often spend a huge amount of time together and even share each other’s physical and mental characteristics.
Sometimes in these cases all the answers we long for are provided at the time of a parent’s death and at other times we will live with the realisation that we never really knew our parents.
Big Fish explores these issues: in this case peace is made between William and his father before he dies but the answers to some of William’s questions are not fully revealed – these questions seem too hard for his father to think through, let alone answer.

Elfman's score is a wonderful balance of introspective bittersweetness and whimsical fantasia, which begins with "Pictures," a quietly brief interlude that mixes strings and distant piano into a wash of memory, loss, and joy.
It melts into "Big Fish (Titles)", which set the recurring tone of the film with the aforementioned mixture of sadness and joy thanks to swelling strings, nice minimalistic piano, and an overall sense of emotion.
Almost too short in length to be considered actual songs, they work more as animated and engaging scene cues, short pieces that have been crafted to heighten the dramatic tension of specific scenes in the film.

And while the composer's music for Burton's Big Fish isn't one of his absolute best efforts it is damn close at times.
But Scissorhands was written fourteen years ago (damn, time really flies...) and Elfman has matured as a composer a lot since then and Big Fish is more of the new Elfman, than the old one, focusing less on grand themes and more on texture.
Well, although Big Fish isn't a typical big theme score, Elfman weaves in a couple of nice melodies into the score.
