  The Big Freeze
But my freezing fireplace could be a candidate for "Unsolved Mysteries." Here's the scoop.
For the first few years, because of relatively warm winters, we didn't notice the fireplace was sucking in a steady stream of cold air -- a dastardly deed known as "backdrafting." But during the last two much-colder winters, our family room was like a meat locker.
Last winter the chill was so big that I sealed the fireplace opening with shrink-wrap insulation, the plastic film that covers drafty windows from the inside.

Big Freeze - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Big Freeze is a scenario in which the universe simply becomes too cold to sustain life due to continued expansion and the decay of free energy due to the action of entropy.
The Big Freeze is a theory of a possible fate of the universe.
The Big Freeze could occur if the universe's geometry is either flat or hyperbolic, as either of those would mean that the universe would expand indefinitely.

 Part III - Big Freezes
This freeze may forever be known as the freeze that killed the palm trees in the Valley.
The worst freeze for a meteorologist may be entirely different than one for a citrus or palm grower.
After that, the four similar freezes of 1852, 1873, 1888, and 1983 are all contenders for fourth place, with 1888 getting the nod since it apparently had more hours in the low twenties.

BBC News | SCI/TECH | How life survived the big freeze
There is growing geological evidence that our planet went into a big freeze at least twice during the late Proterozoic era, 600-800 million years ago, with the polar icecaps a kilometre deep extending to the equator.
The cause of the big freeze is thought to have been a combination of a dimmer Sun - by about 6% - and lower levels of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
One is that a liquid ocean may have soaked up carbon dioxide, preventing the big build-up necessary for the warming phase to begin.

Big Bounce - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Big Bounce is an event derived from the oscillatory universe interpretation of the Big Bang where the first cosmological event was the result of the collapse of a previous universe.
According to some oscillatory universe theorists, the Big Bang was merely the beginning of a period of expansion that followed a period of contraction.
One of the main objections to the Big Bounce view is the evidence that has been accumulating that our universe is destined for a Big Freeze or heat death rather than a Big Crunch (see Accelerating universe).

On Contour, the RTG could be mounted where the unneeded solid kick motor is currently attached; while on Stardust, the RTG could be mounted where the 25-kg sample return capsule for parachuting the comet-dust samples back to Earth when the craft returns here is currently located.
In both cases, that big high-gain antenna dish would go on the craft's other end, just as is planned for the current Pluto Express spacecraft.

Halfbakery: Entropy Prevents The Big Freeze
The big freeze is a potential scenario for the end of the universe.
The big freeze would be a very low entropic state (perfectly ordered), and thus will never happen due to the second law of thermodynamics.
Once the universe reaches total uniformity, as in the big freeze, it will be in a state of perfect equilibrium--no part will be different from any other part, so no part will have any reason to change its state.

If the expansion continues forever then the Universe is destined for the Big Freeze, gradually pulled apart into a cold desolate wasteland of dying stars and fl holes.
