The Big Hole River is a tributary of the Jefferson River, approximately 142 mi (229 km) long, in southwestern Montana in the United States.
It rises in the Beaverhead National Forest in the Beaverhead Mountains of the Bitterroot Range at the continental divide along the Montana-Idaho border in western Beaverhead County.
In 1877 the U.S troops under John Gibbon fought the Nez Percé Indians along the Big Hole River, during the Nez Perce War.

This section of the Big Hole River is the most scenic stretch of the river, at least to me. Starting high in the mountains, the river, which is very narrow at this point, lazily twists and turns its way down into the stunning Big Hole River Valley.
The fly fishing on this stretch of the Big Hole River is primarily for brook trout, cutthroat trout, rainbow trout and the native grayling (all grayling must be released).
Usually by August either an early season frost (the Big Hole River Valley is probably the coldest spot in Montana outside of West Yellowstone) or the dryness of late summer will have scaled back the mosquito populations to tolerable levels.

From its beginning as a small mountain stream, the Big Hole flows north to Wisdom, where it gains strength by joining with the North Fork and flows northeasterly for about 25 miles.
Then, at Glen the Big Hole heads southeast for its remaining 25 miles to the point where it joins the Beaverhead, and forms the Jefferson River, near Twin Bridges, Montana, at an elevation of 4,600 feet.
To put the minimum flow figure in perspective, when the Big Hole was closed to fishing for a few months starting in August of 1994,the flow was measured at the Melrose gauge around 130 cfs.
