When Project Mecury began in October 1958, the purposeof the Little Joe phase was to propel a full-scale, full-weight developmental version of the manned spacecraft to some of the flight conditions that would be encountered during exit from the atmosphere on an orbital mission.
The Little Joe launch vehicle was 48 feet in height, weighed (at maximum) 41,330 pounds, was 6.66 feet in diameter, consisted of four Pollux and four Recruit clustered, solid-fuel rockets, could develop a thrust of 250,000 pounds, and could lift a maximum payload of 3,942 pounds.
The purpose of the instrumentation was to obtain measurement of the vibration and sound environment encountered on the capsule during the firing of the Grand Central abort rocket.

The Little Joe 1 was a solid fuel rocket that was designed to test the Mercury spacecraft Launch Escape and Recovery systems.
The Little Joe 1 was being prepared for launch from the Wallops Flight Facility, Wallops Island, Virginia, on August 21, 1959.
Suddenly, about a half hour before the scheduled launch, the escape rocket fired and pulled the Mercury spacecraft away from the launch pad.The spacecraft reached an apogee of 2000 feet (600 m) and landed about 2000 feet (600 m) away.

This video is referred to by my son as "the one with the John Deere chainsaw in it." I enjoy watching the series myself, unlike many of the intolerable kiddie videos with their stupid characters and insane music.
We own JD for kids vol 1 & 2 and love to watch them with our 3 YO son so this Christmas we gave him vol 3 & 4 and were very disappointed with both but especially vol 4.
