The first transportation problem was to connect Lake Michigan and the Mississippi river; this was accomplished by building the Illinois and Michigan canal to La Salle, at the head of the navigation on the Illinois river, a work which was begun in 1836 and completed in 1848 under the auspices of the state.

The Red River, or Red River of the North as it is known in the United States, flows north from its headwaters in Minnesota, across the Canada-United States international boundary, to its outlet at Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba.
International Red River Pollution Board: In 1964, the IJC was requested by the governments to study and report on the extent and causes of pollution of the Red River at the boundary and to recommend remedial measures.
The International Red River Pollution Board was established by the Commission in June 1969 and has provided continuous surveillance of the water quality of the Red River at the international boundary.

The river and its associated floodplain provide habitat for numerous native fish and wildlife, and serves as a vital migration corridor for ducks and other waterfowl within the Mississippi Flyway.

Shawneetown was a port of entry on the Ohio River for immigrants from the east and south.
There was a demand for the shortest overland route from Shawneetown on the Ohio River to Kaskaskia on the Mississippi River.
This old road came from Kaskaskia to Mulkeytown with a stop at the old Silkwood Inn, across Six Mile township, across Big Muddy River to Plumfield with a stop at the "public well" to water the stock.

In Pulaski County, the new Grand Chain Lodge restaurant and campground, built on a bluff overlooking the river, is dry but the boat ramp is mostly under water.
The Big Muddy River is over its banks at several places.
