Near the Breaks Interstate Park, on the border between Kentucky and Virginia, is a 1600 feet deep, five-mile long canyon of the Big Sandy River known as the Russel Fork.
Big Sandy River rafting trips take place four weekends each year in October, when scheduled releases from the Flannagan Dam on the Pound River flow into the Russell Fork of the Big Sandy and guarantee rafters some of the most challenging whitewater in the east.
With the exception of the eight days in October, the Russell Fork itself is a free flowing stretch of river, meaning water levels are dependent on rainfall and flows are inconsistent.

The neighboring towns here and along the Ohio River supposedly have wellfields and we are being assured the water comes from an aquifer deep underground and not from the river and assured there is a 3 day supply water available.
You'll be happy to know that the state mining agency has ordered the company to replenish all fish and other aquatic life in the creeks and the KY Department of Surface Mining issued four citations Friday to the company for engaging in an unsafe practice by allowing the material to escape.
While the real problem is that area along the Big Sandy River, the only water supply is the Big Sandy and those plants have been told they can not treat the sludge and could be shut down for as long as 60-90 days.
