 Big Science by Laurie Anderson
There was a backlash against Laurie Anderson in "serious" musical and artistic circles after the completely unexpected mainstream commercial success of her debut album, Big Science.
Laurie Anderson : Albums : Big Science : Summary
A thoughtful and often hilariously funny collection of songs from Anderson's work in progress, United States I-IV, Big Science works both as a preview of the larger work and on its own merits.

Album: Big Science (Laurie Anderson: HOMEpage OF THE BRAVE)
The music was made to go with the concert, which was a performance art piece with film, photographs, special effects, spoken text, lights, hand gestures, etc. Laurie once said that when she listens to Big Science she thinks "where are the pictures?" :-) I never felt the album was missing anything.
Laurie did a huge concert called United States I-IV, and Big Science is a studio version of many of the songs.
I put in Big Science, and everyone shut up and listened and didn't stop until it was over.

 Amazon.com: Music: Big Science
Big Science prompted trendy early-'80s art students to plug in their synthesizers and start their own postpunk performance-art-cum-rock-&-roll projects.
There is definately a dark message here as to why we shouldn't trust some science and technology (nuclear energy used to be referred to as "big science"), however I also like to look at it from a pure entertainment angle.
Big Science, however, presents the cream of the crop.

CONTACT HIGH - ROCKET SCIENCE - CONTACT HIGH - EAT SLEEP - -
Led very much from the front by the immortally-named, big organ-toting Roman Tucker, t'Science are making impressive strides with "Contact High": an impressive sophomore album that happily alchemises the band's intrinsic energy with a restless desire to discover the new.
So yeah, "Contact High" is still one mad headfuck of an album, but if you read the vital signs you'll discover Rocket Science are quickly adapting as clued-in sonic technicians rather than just remaining as sloppy space cadets.
Having swept in on the coat-tails of the garage-rock surge, mad-eyed Aussies ROCKET SCIENCE are already thrillingly challenging their boundless energy into new manic directions after the blueprint-hugging sonic barrage that was their "Welcome Aboard The 3C-1O" debut.

 Amazon.com: Music: Big Science
The album actually produced a hit single in the form of "O Superman." That track and "Let X=X" are the two best-known things from this album, which is a condensation of United States, Anderson's four-and-a-half-hour performance-art piece.
Just like she asks in a song from another album, "if this is the work of an angry god/I want to look into his angry face," we are all still looking for answers.
This album stands up much better than the majority of the electronic music that began to emerge in the early 1980s.

 bigg jus
From Bigg Jus, El-P's partner in Company Flow, this album offers brain workout political lyrics over incredible production that's abstract as sh*t but with a warm honest soul infused with rare hip hop melancholy.
Jus seems to favour down, dirty and grimy hip hop from life's gutter rather than El-P's whole new world of science aspect.
Insanely good but frigteningly realistic political-punch future hip hop from Big Jus and Cali underground legend Orko Elohiem on the Big Dada.

Tim Berne: The Sublime And.: Pitchfork Review
The Science Friction band is an electronics-heavy four-piece that merges two of his trios: Hard Cell-- with the stupendous keyboardist and Fender Rhodes specialist Craig Taborn-- and Big Satan, with French post-Frisell guitar deconstructionist Marc Ducret.
Berne recorded this quartet for the Science Friction album on his own Screwgun label last year, and this double-album captures a complete concert in Winterthur, Switzerland, crossing album tracks with new material.
As expected, this performance is louder, longer, and way more chaotic than the studio album; where that first record was intriguingly loopy and colorful, this set just smokes, propelling the band through longer sections and more frantic solos.

He couldn't believe all those people knew who Rocket Science were.
During his stay at the Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre in Kew, Tucker was played a frantic rock'n'roll record loaded with gnarly fuzz-bass, turbo-charged keyboards, manic guitars and big, catchy choruses about "sex calls" and telepathy and various other sci-fi scenarios.
What with recording the new album and accidents, return engagements have been few this year.

Her debut album Big Science is lot like its monochrome cover shot of spiky-haired and andronygous Anderson in a white-washed suit and goggles against a stark grey background.
Co-produced and partly co-written by Brian Eno, Bright Red takes a big step back to the spoken-word sparseness of her early works, yet with a smooth, synthy ambient sound of the 1990s.
Laurie Anderson may not fit conveniently in with what is generally considered progressive rock, but then she does not fit conveniently in with most categories.

 Prick by Melvins: Album Reviews
Unlike the more focused attack of the Houdini and Stoner Witch albums, or even the structured overdrive of Melvins itself, say, Prick is just one big goof, intentionally so.
Finest oddball moment: "Pure Digital Science," where one of the band quietly rasps in an obviously fake Brit accent "And now, for your listening pleasure, a few moments of pure…digital…silence!," which is followed by just that.

Lizzie is looking forward to the science class field trip, but she is mortified when she finds out that her mother is a last-minute replacement as the girls' chaperone.
Lizzie, Miranda and Gordo all have big problems on the day their pictures are to be taken for the junior high yearbook.
Lizzie fears that her mother will embarrass her to death, and Mom does a pretty good job of doing just that while they are competing with the boys on a nature walk.

Unlike the more focused attack of the Houdini and Stoner Witch albums, or even the structured overdrive of Melvins itself, say, Prick is just one big goof, intentionally so.
Figuring that their rabid fanbase wouldn't mind something that for most other bands would have been the kiss of death, namely a collection of jams, jokes and live oddness, the Melvins packed Prick as full as they could and let it loose on the world.
Whipped up strictly as a bit of fun by the band — and also allegedly as a cheap way of getting some money to finance the full Stoner Witch sessions — Prick is barrel-scraping with something of a purpose.

Her debut album Big Science is lot like its monochrome cover shot of spiky-haired and andronygous Anderson in a white-washed suit and goggles against a stark grey background.
While most tracks on their self-titled album are based on the combination of acoustic guitar, various flutes and vocals (in English), the arrangements tend to vary, thanks to the contribution of numerous guests on violins, oboe, clarinet, percussions, bass, choir, piano, etc. As a rule though, the sound remains light, natural and essentially acoustic.
There are twelve pieces on this album in all, and the most interesting tracks (from the standpoint of progressiveness) are from 2 to 5, though, on the whole, this album is full of exceptionally original melodies.

Live Review: Joe Jackson, the Vogue Theatre, February 2, 1998
I, however, own 13 out of his 14 disks (I'm only missing Heaven and Hell, his latest), including the bizarre soundtrack album he did for some Japanese science documentary (or whatever it was for).
Joe, say it ain't so!) and went straight to a spirited rendition "Home Town," from the album Big World, one of my all-time favourites.
It's big, loud, and well-produced 'New Music.' After a brief instrumental break, the trio performed the album in its entirety, start to finish (and seemingly note-for-note), and the whole thing made me think of bad, pretentious theatre that dares to mix too many obvious messages and lectures.

 Daily Vault - November 22, 2000
You know you’re in for a mind-expanding experience when the intro to an album takes you to the center of the Earth, science fiction style, then brings you back up to the sound of a huddle before a big football game in about a minute.
Whether it’s the reflective moments in “Xplosion” or a relentless onslaught of “B.O.B.,” Stankonia is a mature work that actually builds on what their last album, Aquemini, accomplished and takes it to another level.
Just look in the liner notes to what you are going to expect with Stankonia: “Powerful music/electric revival.” If you’re looking for the first benchmark album of the new decade, look no further than this one.

 punk rock blues
Her 1982 albumBig Science’ (which included the single ‘O Superman’) is a record of peaceful, meditative pieces that, at close listening reveal an artist trying to explain the world to herself and, by extension, to all of us.
Dedicated, by Anderson, to peace, it contains songs from her, at the time, most recent record ‘Life on a String’ but also includes re-arranged versions of songs from ‘Big Science’.
It was ‘O Superman’, of course, Laurie’s breakthrough single that brought the New York City avant garde into the homes of America.

Those who enjoyed Jerry Goldsmith's groundbreaking fusion of orchestral and electronic scoring for Michael Anderson's big screen science fiction, Logan's Run (1976) should find much to enjoy in Stanley Myers' score for the director's small screen SF.
Stanley Myers has been sorely-missed since his sad passing almost a decade ago and this album gratefully contributes to a legacy that is somewhat poorly represented on disc.
Without the writing of a musical dramatist of Myers' calibre this album would not have been constantly in my player since it arrived.
