In the late 1850s a plot of land was acquired by the Railroad "for the purpose of erecting a Depot and an eating house for the convenience of the traveling public." This eating place became the famous Lacy House and was operated by Mr.
Big Shanty fell to Sherman's troops on June 6, 1864 after which it served as a supply base, hospital and headquarters for the Union forces.

 Great Locomotive Chase - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
On the morning of April 12, a passenger train with the locomotive General was stopped at Big Shanty (now Kennesaw, Georgia) so that the crew and passengers could have breakfast.
Andrews' men commandeered the General and steamed out of Big Shanty, leaving behind startled passengers, crew members, and onlookers, which included a number of Confederate soldiers from a trackside camp.
A marker indicating where the chase began is near the Big Shanty Museum in Kennesaw.

This was the scene at Big Shanty Elementary School every Monday last semester as Kennesaw State University students and faculty assisted third graders to prepare for their production of “ Momotaro” (“The Peach Boy”), a Japanese-style puppet show.
Bird believes the Big Shanty project is a great way for them to get in there and see how it really is—how classroom management is executed, how children really react to things and how to handle the various small crises that happen during the day.
The Big Shanty project allows KSU students to get a dose of the real-world working situation, local teachers get to help span the gap between the hypothetical and the real, and professors see their programs implemented.

KENNESAW, GA – Nearly 5,000 people observed full-blown re-enactments of the Battle of Big Shanty and the Battle of Dead Angle in Kennesaw on April 22 and 23.
After nearly 20 years, the Big Shanty Festival brought back its popular, large-scale re-enactment, the Battle of Kennesaw at the newly acquired Swift Cantrell Park in Kennesaw, part of the original site of the 1864 battle.
The event was sponsored in conjunction with the Big Shanty Festival by the Southern Museum, the Kennesaw Business Association, City of Kennesaw Parks and Recreation, and the Kennesaw Museum Foundation.

There was no telegraph office at the stop in Big Shanty to broadcast news of what the raiders were about to do, the very reason Andrews had selected this site to begin his operation.
Over the first twenty miles of their journey north from Big Shanty, Andrews and his men took time to pull up rail behind them and drop timbers across the tracks to discourage any possible pursuit, as well as cutting telegraph lines that might have sent news of their desperate mission ahead to waiting Confederate troops.

 The General's Final Journey
At 9:00 AM work began on the movement of the General from the house track at Kennesaw to the Big Shanty Museum, some 150 yards away.
At 5:00 PM the General was safely in the Big Shanty Museum, and Mayor Louis E. Watts had a crew on hand immediately to cut the rails and begin closing the north wall of the building.
