Movies that no one knows what they are about may benefit from having a star or a name that gives the audience a clue what to expect.
Movies that have name recognition and a ready made fan base such as Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and POTO not only don't need "big names"; casting "big names" is more likely to turn that fan base off than do anything else.
The minute the studios start talking about how they need some "Name" they are sending the fans the message that they don't have enough faith in their product and that their main interest is NOT in making the best movie possible.

 20th Century Fox @ Filmbug
The studio is a subsidiary of News Corporation, the Australian media conglomerate owned by Rupert Murdoch.
The studio has its origins in two separate companies: Fox Film Corporation founded by William Fox in 1915, and Twentieth Century Pictures, formed in 1933 by Darryl F. Zanuck (formerly of Warner Brothers) and Joseph Schenck of United Artists.
Though the studio owned the rights to the updated name, it decided to keep its name unchanged to honor the century in which Hollywood's "classic" films were made.

 CNN.com - The wonder of Hollywood - Aug 8, 2005
Movies are based on an illusion, of course -- the idea that individual images, played in a darkened theater on a large screen at 24 frames per second, can create a bigger-than-life experience.
In the early days, movies were ways to fill empty theaters; later, the studios established their own theater chains, which were broken up in an antitrust decision in the late '40s.
Which is why studios still put so much energy into making a splash, from making sure their new releases get prominent play in magazines and on television (especially if they own the outlet) and shrewdly using the horse-race-like weekly top 10 list to keep interest high.

The Big Picture | Why is Movie Theatre Revenue Attendance Declining?
The studios keep telling us that every dang movie they make is a blockbuster, so pretty soon, you just tune them all out and let other people waste their $8 and report back to you.
Although I have downloaded one movie when I went to the theater and had to leave in the middle of the film because the fire alarm was triggered, that experience made me really reject downloading bootlegs because of the astounding poor quality (and my TV is bilt to be a computer monitor).
Apr 18, 2006 2:10:37 PM the decline of movie attendence is most certainly due to the fact that the people who commission films are generally a committy of unimaginative fat cats who merit films on their profitability rather than their artistic content.

Hollywood Movie Premieres   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
New movies open every week in Hollywood, of course, but often the big studios decide to pull out all the stops and throw an old-fashioned, full-blown Hollywood premiere (sometimes called "special screenings").
Movie stars dressed in tuxedos and evening gowns arrive in stretch limousines in front of the theatre, to the applause of an adoring crowd.
And some movies don't have premieres at all (especially if the producers are trying to hide a weak film from movie critics until after its release).

Gibson's "Passion" could prompt more religious films - Feb. 25, 2004
But one studio executive, speaking on condition his name not be used, said he also expects mainstream studios to take a new look at religious movies assuming "Passion" is the success it is now expected to be.
But much of the marketing success, which has resulted in millions of tickets presold to the movie, is from Gibson's courting of church groups, particularly the 28 percent of the nation that belongs to fundamentalist Christian churches.
They say that even if the studios don't rush to produce big-budget religious films themselves, at least the films will have an easier time finding studios willing to put their marketing clout behind a film in a distribution deal.

A very big big year in animation
Ten years ago, Hollywood released as few as three or four animated movies a year, with Disney the only steady player.
It seems that the animation world is falling victim to the same dilemma that all the giant action adventure movies have suffered from in recent years.
And again, I agree that these movies are not doing a good job in luring us into their worlds.

If Apple and the studios are able to reach common ground on pricing, the iTMS may be able to nudge the movie industry into the 21st century.

Osmosis Jones may be a movie that not many people saw in the cinema, but the people who did see it were pretty universal in their praise for this interesting combination of live action and animation.
In other words, you really have to botch up the release of a movie for it to reach that legendary status that no filmmaker really aspires to, but which does raise the awareness people have of your movie (meaning that many flops are able to clean up after all, when they are released on DVD!).
There are plenty of movies which did not cost half as much as the movies on this list, but which were even bigger disasters when you count in percentages.

Commentaries: Top Ten Movie Musicals - Christianity Today Movies
In the '40s and early '50s, movie musicals relied heavily on the Hollywood styled song-and-dance numbers that were often a staple of MGM studios.
As movie musicals began to take on weightier themes and stories in the sixties, The Music Man remains one of the final throwbacks to a time when musical theater was simpler and sunnier.
Nevertheless, this film is regularly included among the top movies of all time, placing in the top ten of the American Film Institute's list.

of the Monkey
Currently, the only audience large enough to support big budget animated movies, even at China's cut rates, is the United States — the world market now essentially consists of a Western audience.
In the short term, GDC and other animation studios that will follow in its footsteps are going to be successful by providing cheap labor and creative talent for Western projects and co-productions.
Given GDC's comprehensive approach to training and studio management at the Institute of Digital Media Technology, it's not surprising that GDC is at the forefront of digital cinema, a move that completes the production chain from creator to viewer.

 Film History of the 1920s
By the mid-20s, movies were big business (with a capital investment totaling over $2 billion) with some theatres offering double features.
The studio system was essentially born with long-term contracts for stars, lavish production values, and increasingly rigid control of directors and stars by the studio's production chief and in-house publicity departments.
She was boosted to Paramount Studios' super-stardom in the late 1920s by more publicity campaigns, fan magazine glamorization, and rumor-spreading.

Studios are falling all over themselves to cash in: several Asian hits are being remade right now with big stars like Sarah Michelle Gellar and Jennifer Connelly.

Although the studios' decision to cater to that audience caused some movie snobs to sneer at the remade "Ring" before even seeing it, Zombie said he thought it was great.

Big Movie Zone -- Big Movie Box Office
While some Big Movie DVDs and home videos have done surprisingly well, and the market is increasing in size of late, these sources cannot yet be considered significant revenue streams for an average Big Movie filmmaker.
In Big Movies, approximately 80% of gross ticket revenue is kept by theaters, with only 20% going to the distributor and producer.
In the Big Movie business, on the other hand, theaters must purchase the pricey prints (around $25,000 for a 2D print, and $50,000 for 3D), often up front, and handle most or all marketing for the film locally, out of their own budgets.

The New Yorker : talk : content   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-17)
While Hollywood had traditionally “platformed” its movies, starting them out in a few theatres and then gradually adding more in the course of weeks or months, “Jaws” opened on more than four hundred screens across the country, a wider release than any previous film had had.
You’re supposed to think that a studio wouldn’t spend so much or put a film on so many screens unless it was confident that it could recoup its investment, and therefore the movie must be worth your ten bucks.
A movie that makes $120 million in three weeks can be more lucrative than one that makes $200 million in three months.
