In Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, I was told that the 2 "Donkey Engines" that are by the queue are from the Disney movie, "Hot Lead and Cold Feet." In that movie they were used in a race.
Big Thunder had an oversight regarding how the roof of the train engine tilted back into the area of the first seat of the first passenger car during some parts of the ride.
The name "Big Thunder", which originally referred to the falls that thundered down next to the mine train tracks lives on, not only in the name of the roller coaster, but also for a while in the ranch nearby and later the barbecue portion of the ranch.

On Big Thunder Mountain is right before the second to last big hill (the one with the goat, snakes, turtles, and skunks), right after you come out of the tunnel before it you look to your left and you can see three rusted gears.
On the ride Big Thunder Mountain, on the second slow trek uphill, lying on the ground on the left hand side is 3 large rusted gears that appropriately make a "Hidden Mickey".
On "B" lift of thunder mountain, the second lift on the attraction, about a 1/4 of the way up on your left hand side are 3 big gear wheels, one big and 2 smaller ones, laying upside down in the form of Mickey mouse.

For the third time in 10 months, Disneyland's popular Big Thunder Mountain Railroad roller coaster ride made news last week, when one train returning to the platform collided with another train that had loaded and was waiting to depart.
According to both this eyewitness account and a source familiar with the previous Big Thunder Mountain accidents, this latest incident occurred when one train (#2), directed to the right side of the loading platform, struck another train (#1) still in the station.
The Big Thunder Mountain Railroad experienced an emergency stop on Saturday, April 3, 2004, less than a week after it reopened from the 2003 accident.

When you are in the fort facing the mountain, go in the "turret" (where the guns are) on the right closest to the mountain.
On the attraction Big Thunder Mountain Railroad there is a hidden Mickey made up of 3 gears at the end of the ride as you enter BZ4, or right after the dinosaur bones, they are on the right hand side in the grass.
There is only ONE hidden Mickey on Big Thunder Mountain and that is the one seen at the very end of the ride before you go into the station, look to the right of the track and notice that there are three gears or whatever that form a traditional Mickey head.

Our recommendation: take advantage of the under-visited Country Bear Jamboree, which is right around the corner from Big thunder and Splash Mountain, while waiting on your Fastpass to become active — and avoid any stand-by line longer than 10 minutes for this ride, as the queue can be excruciatingly hot.

Big Thunder is an example of just that since many of the ride's details rush by while you're in the middle of laughing with little kids who are experiencing their first roller coaster and big kids that just like to laugh.
It's fun in a purely fun sort of way and the painted rocks, flying bats (on strings no doubt), railroad ties (underneath the entire length of the track, which is a wonderful detail) and the little engines in front of the trains, make this the "cutest" roller coaster in the world.
It must take a lot of guts to be a little train racing through the quaking, bat-filled Big Thunder Mountain, and that's evidenced in the names of the trains.

Big Thunder is a perfect example of how WDI can use theming and set elements to enhance an attraction.
By any standad, Big Thunder is a slow, tame, and lame rollercoaster, but because the track is always at "ground" level and is constantly passing by and through huge rock formations, it gives the impression of moving much faster than it actually does.
Besides, it's hard to find a cooler sight than Big Thunder at night when the steam rises up from the sulfur pool and wafts over the Tyrannosaur skeleton while the whole scene is lit with otherworldly blue and green light.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad re-opened again on Friday the 27th of August, after a seven week down time following an accident on July 8th that caused minor injuries to five passengers.
The DOSH report that was released prior to the attraction's re-opening states that the fault was operator error by the tower CM in addition to a unique sequence of events that caused a technical malfunction as well.
Since the incident on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, the attraction has remained closed while the cause was investigated by both DOSH, and the Walt Disney Parks and Resorts team.

The queue area takes you into the headquarters of the Big Thunder Mining Co. You enter converted ore cars for your journey....but wait, there is NO conductor!
Caves, grottos, a waterfall, big horned sheep, a spiral butte, dinosaur bones and sulfur pools are just part of the scenery you will encounter on your ride.
There are no serious drops on this ride (nothing like Splash Mountain) but there are 3 good dips that can put some air between you and your seat.

During the Splash Mountain ride, the tour guide was careful to hang on to her attractive bucket-shaped hat.
One of the guests had offered to put it into his backpack for her for the duration of the attraction, but she told us that company policy does not allow tour guides to remove their headwear, no matter what, even if it is on fire.
The ride symbolizing this era was Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, but instead of going on it, the tour guide just looked at it and shook her head with kind of a sorrowful, disappointed look as a symbol of those sad days.
