Big Trouble in Little China, like Escape from New York, is a dodge against type: Carpenter not as a master of horror (since Halloween, that has been his burden), but an entertainer in the broadest sense.

SPLICEDwire | "Big Trouble" review (2002) Barry Sonnenfeld, Tim Allen, Rene Russo, Dennis Farina, Ben Foster, Janeane ...
How apropos it seems that the enjoyably outrageous screwball satire "Big Trouble" should open a little more than a week after the death of Billy Wilder, whose influence is felt all over this picture's breakneck comedic pacing.
As one of a dozen characters with equal screen time, Allen's connection to the plot is almost peripheral, but he gives great voice-over (from the zany Dave Barry book on which the film is based) that helps keep straight the cavalcade of well-cast kooks to come.
When I first saw "Big Trouble" on Sept. 10, 2001, these scenes were considerably funnier than they seemed in the wake of the next day's events.

Big Trouble was originally supposed to come out Sept. 14, but because of a few scenes featuring a bomb in an airport and a hijacking, the release date was pushed back.
Studio executives were assuredly shaking in their boots about what to do with this content, but their concerns were in vain — the content is actually pretty slick airport humor that goes by quickly.
Eliot Arnold (Tim Allen) is endorsed as the main character, but it's difficult to focus on one central personality — there are several intertwined interactions in the story and an ensemble cast huge enough to push the plot firmly into the backseat.
