The East River Mountain Tunnel near Bluefield, West Virginia carries Interstate 77 through/under East River Mountain.
The northern end of the tunnel is in West Virginia, and the southern end is in Virginia.
The tunnel is about 20 miles (32 km) north of its shorter cousin, the Big Walker Mountain Tunnel.

Born in Lensvik in Sør-Trøndelag, Norway, Singstad was educated at the Trondheim Tekniske Læreanstalt, and in 1905 he emigrated to the USA.
He also constructed the Lincoln Tunnel, the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel and the Queens-Midtown Tunnel in New York City, and a tunnel under the river Schelde in Antwerp, Netherlands.
This firm did the final design of The Big Walker Mountain Tunnel in Virginia.

Specifically, the Big Bend Tunnel in Talcott, W.Va. The project was part of a 19th-century effort to expand the railroad west across Virginia from the Atlantic.
Tunnels were necessary in the mountains of western Virginia because of physics.

Big Walker Mountain located a few hundred yards from the Wythe County line and East River Mountain,which forms the Virginia and West Virginia border, are the locations of these tunnels.
Bland County was a very isolated place before these tunnels were constructed.

The Allegheny Mountain Shooting Complex rests on 1056 acres in Penn Township Clearfield County near the villages in Irishtown and Walltown.
Knowing these big guns are noisy they asked the club if it was O.K. to shoot 50s, and the club granted permission.
