A big-block engine is a North American V8 in a family of engines which generally have greater than 5.9 litres (360 cubic inches) of displacement ; factory engine sizes reached a peak of 8.2 litres (500 cubic inches) in Cadillac 's 1970s range.
Smaller V8 engines are known as small-blocks ; some members of small-block engine families may exceed 6 litres, blurring the distinction somewhat.
NASCAR's 7-litre engine size limit explains why many high-performance big blocks are of this size; Chevrolet's 427, Ford's 427, Chrysler's 426 Hemi.

The short big block V8 has a deck height (centerline of crankshaft to cylinder deck measured along the centerline of the bore) of 9.80" and a height (centerline of crankshaft to top of engine along the center of the V) of 10.75".
The big blocks have been produced in 3.935", 4.096", 4.125", 4.250", and 4.440" bores and strokes of 3.47", 3.76", and 4.00".
Over the years from 1965 to 1995 the big blocks were offered in nine different displacements from 366 cid to 502 cid.

Big torque at low engine speeds was a major priority of the 400’s design, and the 400’s long stroke helped to assure that performance in a package that was both smaller and lighter than its predecessor, the 385 series (429/460) big block.
However, the main disadvantage of using the big port, big valve 351C 4V heads on an M-block is that the power band of the M-block is not compatible with the port volume of the 351C 4V heads.
The 400 featured a unique engine block design with the big-block (429/460) bell housing bolt pattern, and the same bore diameter (4.00") and bore spacing (4.38") as the 351C and the later Windsor-class small blocks (i.e., 289, 302, and 351W).

If you use the power steering pump from the donor big block, the biggest problem is that the flared fittings on the end of the power steering hoses will not mate to the metric O-ringed connections in the steering gear box.

A V8 or V10 choice shouldn't be based on the number of cylinders - there's not that much design difference.
Now, if you're going to compare the current 8.1L Vortec V8 to the 6.8L Triton V10, then I don't think too many will argue the point that the GM engine is stronger.

First of the big blocks and first of a family of engines known by their factory nomenclature: "FE".

The more common the engine the bigger the market for it, which in turn means cheaper to upgrade, therefore if the new GT-R gets a V8 the price for quality internal parts will be outragiously priced to be able to achieve enormous power numbers we have seen from the RB26DETT.
The V8 is suposted to come from the Q45 so it will have around 350 horses.
The V8 can still be tuned to make even more power before going for forced induction.

Because the cylinder head bolts determine the bottom of the header flange on the production Big Block Chevrolet head, this flange, by being designed on a head with a raised exhaust area, has considerably more metal around the bottom (and sides) of the exhaust port for better gasket sealing.
By not being willing to spend the time to build Big Block headers the right way, the exhaust ports not only end up being blocked by the headers (reducing flow) but an "exhaust reversion" problem is usually created in the engine as well - a problem that didn't even exist with the factory exhaust manifolds!
These flanges are often used on other raised port Big Block Chevrolet heads - just depends on port location, shape, and size (send us a port tracing).

For comparison purposes, a old full size Chevy car with a big block V8 might have had a 454 cubic inch engine from the factory that put out around 375HP in stock form.
if that Chevy with big block 454 V8 engine put out as much power per engine displacement as a nitro engine found in typical big block powered nitro rc trucks and rc cars, then that bone stock Chevy 454 engine would be producing OVER 4000 HP !!
Compare that to a stock big block V8 engine that starts running out of breath at 6000 RPM.
