I drove out west to Darwin, MN, which is the home of the The World's Largest Ball of Twine, better known to many folks by the title Weird Al Yankovic gave it, "The Biggest Ball of Twine in Minnesota", in the song of the same name.
The waitress immediately pegged me as a tourist; it might have been my camera bag, but it was probably just as much the fact that Darwin has a population of 252, and she probably knows most or all of its citizens, at least by sight.
In 1991, the Twine Ball was moved (by truck and crane) to its current home, an event publicized in the local papers and, apparently, the National Enquirer.

Johnson's twine ball still holds the record as the largest ball of twine built by only one man. There are other bigger twine balls located in the United States but most of which were a collective effort when being built they do not contend with the one in Darwin.
I'm not sure what the people of the town really think of the twine but my impression is that it falls close to their hearts.

A reasonable conclusion is that the biggest ball of twine in Minnesota is bigger than the biggest ball of twine in whatever state this family is from.
There really is such a twine ball, in Darwin, Minnesota, and for a while it held the record for the world's biggest ball of twine.
They only way it would work for me would be to embed it in a sentence like I saw the biggest ball of twine in the world in Minnesota, where in Minnesota modifies the verb saw, not the noun phrase.
