  The Story of Biggin Hill
By 1900 Biggin Hill was a small settlement of approximately 500 people clustered by the side of the Westerham Road and based around the junction with Jail Lane by the Black Horse Inn.
Biggin Hill was remote and as the name suggests, hilly, so the cost of transporting building materials from the nearest station was prohibitive.
Biggin Hill was part of a different trend, albeit one that used the fashionable Garden City concept as a marketing ploy.

Photography isn’t quite as challenging either; the crowd line at Biggin is such that by mid afternoon, the sun has moved from over your shoulder to stare you in the face, and in September this made things particularly tricky with the sun obviously being lower in the sky.
ATC restrictions at Biggin make the fast jets particularly impressive, as with so many major airports nearby, they’re forced into their flat displays even in such perfect weather conditions, keeping them low and tight in front of the crowd.
Biggin truly had something for everyone, and completing the mix were the historic aircraft.

An important anniversary in the UK Airshow world was marked on the 12th May 2005 at Biggin Hill Airport, the 40th Anniversary of the first ever display by the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows.
To mark the occasion, there was a special display was put on at Biggin Hill Airport for invited guests and 300 school children from schools in the South East of England.
Biggin's proximity to the London Gatwick and the approach to Heathrow often restricts displays at the Biggin Hill airshows, and this display was no different with the Red Arrows restricted to their flat display.

Over the generations, in the vicinity of Biggin Hill, there lurked groups of mischievous young men who saw the teapot as a challenging ‘Prize’ to be had at all costs.

With the demise of the North Weald shows some time ago, Biggin Hill was left as London's only major airshow and thanks to skyrocketing public liability insurance rates after the September 11th terrorist attacks in the USA and a lack of big sponsors, it seemed that this show, too, was doomed.
Foreign civilian participation was a different matter however, with the US-based Grumman Albatross making another appearance at Biggin (her last in the UK before the long series of hops to get back home to the USA) and a pair of old timers from Sweden - a Tummelisa (1919 biplane type) and a Bleriot replica.
A single Spitfire joyously rolling over Biggin Hill, this most famous of Battle of Britain airfields, can bring on a shiver to the most stoic of characters and it was simply the perfect end to a damn good show.
