  97th Bomb Wing
While at Smoky Hill AFB, the wing was attached to the 301st Bombardment Wing, Very Heavy, for further training and to assist the 301st prepare for its upcoming move to Germany.
Biggs AFB would remain the wing's home for over ten years.
As the Air Force began reorganizing in 1991, it redesignated the wing as the 97th Wing on 1 September, and inactivated it on 1 April 1992.

Biggs was an El Paso native killed in a plane crash October 27, 1918 at Beltran, France.
Biggs AFB became a Strategic Air Command asset when the 97th Bomb Wing moved to the base from Smokey Hill AFB, Kansas, in May 1948.
The 1st SSS was deactivated in 1959, the 97th BW moved to Eaker AFB that same year and in 1966 the 95th BW was deactivated and the 4758th DSES moved to Holloman AF, NM.

The aircraft assigned to Biggs were 30 B-36's, 45 B-47's, plus a number of KB-50's, KC-97's, C-45's, C-54's, C-119's, C-124's, T-33's as well as B-26's, B-45's, and B-57's which were used to tow targets for the Army's Fort Bliss anti-aircraft training center.
Starting in early 1957 the Mk 17's at Biggs were prepped for ferry, loaded into a B-36 and flown to Kirtland AFB, NM to be demilitarized.
In early 1959 the last B-36 aircraft was retired and all other aircraft were transferred from Biggs AFB while the runway was rebuilt and lengthened to accept B-52's.

Some B-52Bs remained with the 93rd BW until well into the 1960s, although some of the B-52Bs were redistributed to the 95th BW at Biggs AFB in Texas and the 22nd BW at March AFB in California.
Most of the B-52Bs were retired in 1965-66, with 52-8714 being the first Stratofortress to be retired by a SAC wing when it was transferred to Chanute AFB in Illinois on March 8, 1965, where it was used as a non-flying instructional airframe.
Most of the B-52Bs went to storage at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona in 1965/66, but a few were delivered to museums.

If you ever have the chance to view the B-36 on display at the Aviation Heritage Museum in Fort Worth, Texas my initials are carved on the lower #3 inboard engine nacelle.
I was on the pre-flight maintenance crew when that aircraft (serial no. 52-2827A) was being readied for its final flight from Biggs AFB in El Paso to Carswell AFB in Fort Worth on 12 February 1959 for permanent display at Amon-Carter Field.
I was also on the pre-flight maintenance of the very last B-36 to fly (serial no. 52-2220) which left Biggs AFB for Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona in March, 1959, and then to Wright-Patterson AFB in Ohio on April 30, 1959 for permanent display in the Air Force Museum.

Sneddon immediately contacted the Director of the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, and requested that the B-29 be given to Hill AFB for restoration and display.
In the Fall of 1983 members of the 2952nd Combat Logistics Support Squadron from Hill AFB disassembled and moved the old B-29 by truck from Dugway to Hill Aerospace Museum for restoration and display.

Henderson, NV I was a mechanic on the B-50D with the 97th BW at Biggs AFB from 1950 till 1952.
I was sent TDY to Flight Engineer school and returned to Biggs and assigned to the 341st BS.
When the 97th broke up, some of our aircraft were sent to the bone yard and some were converted to weather ships, I think 48113 was converted to a weather ship.

In September of 1945 the unit returned to Biggs and was redesignated the 27th TTS.
When Biggs AFB closed in 1966 the 4758th moved to Holloman AFB, NM where it remained until merging with the 4677th DSES in late 1970.

I mentioned to our daughter that I had lived there at Biggs AFB, from 1958 to 1962, and would love to see it again.
After a quick breakfast, I insisted that we head out to Biggs, now a part of Fort Bliss.
