Bighead carp can weigh 18 - 23 kg (40 - 50 lbs) by their fourth year (Henderson 1978) and have been documented as large as 40 kg (90 lbs) in their native range (Pflieger 1997).
Bighead carp migrate upstream to spawning grounds (Jennings 1988) which are characterized by rapid currents with a mixing of water, such as at a confluence of rivers or behind sandbars, stonebeds, or islands (Huet 1970).

 ASIAN CARP
Bighead carp Hypophthalmichthys nobilis, native to the large rivers of eastern China, were first brought to the U.S. in 1972 by a private fish farmer in Arkansas tom improve water quality and increase fish production in culture ponds.
Because of its feeding habits, bighead carp is a direct competitor with paddlefish, bigmouth buffalo, and gizzard shad; as well as with all larval and juvenile fishes and native mussels.
Silver carp have spread throughout the large rivers in the Mississippi basin and are reproducing in off-channel and backwater habitats.

The bighead carp, an Asian import used to control aquatic vegetation, is known to be present in modest numbers in the Arkansas River and White River.
Bighead carp are found only in major rivers like the Arkansas and the lower White, and fishermen rarely catch them because they don't take large baits.
The bighead carp's keel or belly plate is short and near the rear instead of extending all the way underneath the fish as with a silver carp.

It is reported that bighead carp spawn in the Missouri, Illinois and Mississippi River’s.
Bighead carp grow rapidly and after they reach maturity they are able to gain a pound or more per month.
In areas where bighead carp are so numerous, they are fouling the nets of commercial fisherman to the point where they can no longer lift their nets and are forced to abandon those fishing spots.

The objectives of this study were to document spatial and temporal variability of larval bighead carp in the Missouri River, to assess age, growth and gonadal characteristics of bighead carp in the Missouri River, and to experimentally test for competitive interactions between bighead carp and paddlefish Polyodon spathula.
Larval bighead carp were collected on June 25, 1997 and July 2 and 9, 1998 (3 of 19 sampling periods during May-July 1997 and 1998).
Bighead carp negatively affected growth of paddlefish through competition for food, and an increase in intraspecific competition negatively affected growth of bighead carp.

The objectives of this study were to examine the temporal and spatial variation in the density of larvae and to estimate the spawning date of bighead carp in the lower Missouri River.

Bighead and silver carp are far superior to common carp in flavor.
Bighead and silver carp are filter feeders; they are unlikely to take any kind of lure or fly unless they accidentally suck it in (as paddlefish sometimes are snagged in the mouth).
I am one of the foremost experts on bighead and silver carp in the US, and I am convinced that all or nearly all the reports of bighead carp jumping into boats are the result of misidentification of silver carp.
