The Fraser magnolia (Magnolia fraseri) also called Mountain magnolia, Earleaf cucumbertree, or Mountain-oread, is a small, deciduous tree native to the southern Appalachians.
It is a basal-branching, fragrant plant, with auriculate-lobed leaves and brown bark with a "warty" or "scaly" texture.
The fruit is a woody, oblong, cone-like structure (like all Magnolias) up to 12 cm long, covered in small, pod-like follicles which contain one or two red seeds that hang out from the cone by a slender thread when ripe.

“Magnolia ashei, the rarest species of Magnolia in the flora, is limited to six counties in the Florida panhandle; it is in danger of extirpation because of habitat disturbance.
Magnolia ashei differs from M. macrophylla in being a smaller, often multitrunked tree with smaller leaves, fewer stamens and pistils, smaller seeds, smaller stipules, filiform trichomes, and smaller, nearly glabrous, cylindric follicetums.
Magnolia ashei flowers at an early age (three to four years from seed); it is a desirable small tree in cultivation.

The bigleaf magnolia is found statewide in Alabama, most commonly on the western side of the state.
