This evaluation, covering the three districts which comprise the region of Ziguinchor (Bignona, Oussouye, Ziguinchor), was led by a team from the Regional Medical Authority accompanied by a trainer from AGADA.
Within the district of Bignona, the training of general populations has been so thorough that the leaf powder is very commonly used by families, so much so that the health posts no longer feel the need to keep their own stocks on hand.
Moringa is being used to treat cases of infant malnutrition in 82% of the health posts visited in the district of Bignona and in 70% of the health posts in the other districts.

He was a songwriter attached to a group of singers in Balankine in the vicinity of Bignona.
He was arrested by members of the armed forces (whereas most of those mentioned in Amnesty International's memorandum were arrested by the gendarmerie) and was apparently suspected of being a member of the independence movement.
Casamance region is situated in the south of Senegal and extends from the southern border of the Gambia, south across the lower reaches of the Casamance River to Senegal's southern borders with Guinea-Bissau.

In Senegal, where the tree is often grown around people's houses, the tree is called "Nebeday;" most likely a derivative of the English words "never die" in reflection of the tree's ability to withstand drought, grow quickly from seed or cuttings, and regenerate itself even after the most severe pruning.
Atabou Mané, supervisor of the primary health care department at the hospital in Bignona, 30 km north of Ziguinchor, is one of the 171 health workers who have attended a Moringa seminar.
Mané, is a nurse in charge of pediatrics at the Bignona hospital.

 Senegal: Food aid for displaced persons and visits to detainees in Casamance
Since 13 July an ICRC doctor and a delegate have been conducting a new round of visits to people arrested in connection with the events in Casamance.
The team has already seen detainees in the Dakar prison and is currently visiting the places of detention situated in the south of the country, in Bignona, Kolda and Ziguinchor.
In accordance with the ICRC's standard working procedures, the team is holding private interviews with detainees to find out about their living conditions and the treatment they receive.

Forceful counterinsurgency measures by government troops in 2002 were followed by a lull in fighting during 2003 and hard-line insurgent leader Sidi Badji’s died in May. Nevertheless, many refugees from the Casamance remained reluctant to return home during the year.
Intermittent rebel attacks and Senegalese military reprisals caused the internal displacement of an estimated 17,000 Senegalese in 2003, mostly in Ziguinchor, the largest town in the Casamance, Bignona, and Oussouye area near the Senegal—Guinea-Bissau border.
Many of the displaced took refuge with relatives, thus remaining less visible and quickly returned home during lulls in fighting.

The Senegalese army announced last weekend that it had begun an operation to curb increased insecurity and banditry in Casamance, an area in southern Senegal that borders on The Gambia.
The Senegalese daily Sud Quotidien reported on Monday that the operation began on Friday in the department of Bignona.
The French news agency, Agence France Presse, on Wednesday reported Gambian national television as saying that over 1,000 Casamance residents had crossed into The Gambia over the weekend.

ANGOLA: REKINDLING HOPE: On 4 February three ICRC delegates and three local employees evacuated 73 orphans from the town of Kuando, in Huambo province, to the city of Huambo.
On 27 January the ICRC, working with the regional committee of the Senegalese Red Cross Society in Ziguinchor, carried out a food distribution for displaced people in the Ziguinchor and Bignona departments of Casamance.
The beneficiaries had fled their villages because of the insecurity that prevailed following clashes between Senegalese government forces and the separatist Movement of Democratic Forces of Casamance (MFDC).
